I really like this movie!

This is one of my favorite low-budget obscure movies. Anybody else like it? I think they should've kept the movie in the 70's and not try to make it look like the 30's or 40's. They didn't have the budget to make an actual period looking picture,

I'm probably in the minority among the few people who've actually seen the movie, but I prefer the attempts at atmosphere to the straight-out gore. Moments like the scarecrow dance, the dinner table discussion about poisoned boy scouts and the jack-o-lantern scene in the cellar are very effective for a no-budget film with amateur cast and crew.

All in all, The Child is definitely one of my fave "lost" films of the 70's.

I saw this movie on video in about 1982, I was nine years old & all us kids were at my uncle's house, we all loved horror movie's & it scared the %$#@ out if me.

I have not seen it since but will never forget the scene in the cellar, I have asked people over the years if they have seen or know of this movie who are into horror & they have never heard of it, this is the first time since 1982 I have ever found any documentation on it, so I'm stoked. Will go & try to find a copy asap.... Great movie, i also remember the car scene with the Zombie's from memory it was just on dawn.... I think they were blowing the horn to try to warn them off but could be wrong, it's been 23 years.

It's one of my favorite(very)low budget movies, too!
The atmosphere is really unique and very creepy (the cemetery scenes, the scarecrow ...)
Great underrated gem

The budget of The Child wouldn't have covered the catering cost of your average medium budget Hollywood production, but it's still far more successful as a basic horror film than it would be fair to expect. I wish Voskanian would have directed at least one other genre film. He wasn't exactly a budding Carpenter but definitely had interesting visual ideas and an eye for twisted atmospherics.

I really dug this genuinely creepy and unnerving 70's low-budget killer kid horror flick. Rosalie Cole is perfectly snotty and hateful as the titular evil little brat, Laurel Barnett makes for a very pretty and appealing heroine, and the zombies are extremely scary and ugly buggers. Moreover, the 30's period setting and brooding gloomy Southern atmosphere are strong and effective. The wonky synthesizer score and unusual and imaginative cinematography (I loved those odd tilted camera angles!) are up to snuff as well. I own the excellent Something Weird DVD for this freaky little fright flick.

I watched this on Elvira's show. Damn, I miss that show.

Anyways, I agree. This is a great little film that not enough people have seen. The atmosphere is just so palpable from the moment Alicianne rolls up on Mrs. Whitfield who warns her about not going into the woods at night. Creepy! I also love the scene by the mother's grave where, during the storm, the little girl, with tears rolling down her face, draws up her plan of revenge. There's something so unsettling about that scene.

Voskanian, I salute you for making a great little film.

Yepper!
I picked this up used for $5 and got my moneys worth. If you know you're going into low budget campy film making, you won't be sorry.

Trust me,

I love iot. It's like a nightmare on film, very spooky and creepy with nightmare logic much like Phantasm, The Children (1980), Fulci's Gates of Hell trilogy, and The Video Dead. The look pulls off that nightmare/spooky/creepy look perfectly with the film stock, the camera shots that move slightly to give it that docu-hand held look unlike the shaky cam of today, the rolling fog, the sunsets and night blues, the overcast look, etc. Plus Laurel Barnett is beautiful, she looks almost exactly like Sarah Bolger.

"The Child" rules! I love the movie's cheap atmosphere, the makeup, and especially the completely artificial sound design (right down to the dubbing). I geeked out about this movie on my blog a few years ago:
