The ending wasn't that obscure...

I've read a lot about people not understanding the ending or saying it was symbolic and poem to interpretation but it seemed fairly cut and dry in terms of narrative presentation to me.

I think that Don was the head of the terrorist organization and walked Conchita to the market to kill both him self and her.

It was a final act of madness that he was driven to after being so badly hurt by the woman he loved. He didn't believe that the rouse was over, and was coming back because she realized she could get more than house from him. He was 2 steps ahead of Conchita in the end, realizing that she was trying to play him again. He knew he couldn't escape the love he felt for her, but couldn't stand being manipulated to such extremes, remedied the situation the best he could. I mean, they were shopping and killed while spending his money, it's poetic given her motives.

I think Don was the head of the terrorist origination for a couple of reasons.
He was walking around with the burlap sack on the water front and then again in Spain. The burlap sack presumably contained bomb, and that's why he walked her over to the window at the end. He knew what was going to happen, and the radio playing was reminding us of the threat. Why else would a man use a tattered old burlap sack to carry something around when clearly he had nicer bags.
Also, (and I could be wrong on this as I've only just watched the film for the first time), they never say what he does for a living. He has all this money but it is never told to the audience what exactly he does. How can he afford to just pick up and move to Spain? What kind of job would allow that?
In the beginning he's having lunch with the judge but I think that was a way of hiding in plain sight. he was trying to get info on the case they were discussing about the terrorists.
And trouble followed him to Spain.perhaps he was the one arming the revolutionaries. There was not mention of terrorism in the rest of Europe until he was there.

I know I should elaborate and write a little more clearly but I'm typing on a iPad and it's kind of a pain in the ass, but you get what my points are at least.

Of course, you're all right making from the movie what you like.

You may, however, take some hints from others in here and elsewhere, that could help you to watch a totally different movie, so that effectively you can see two movies. ;-)
