Other Killer Car Movies???????

I love Killer Car films. The Car is my favourite and I really like Christine, and there's a new one called Hybrid coming out soon. I'm sure I must have seen more than that but can't think of them right now. Can anyone recommend any others?

I forgot all about Maximum Overdrive. Haven't seen it in years, so I think I'll have to get it. Cheers for reminding me about it. I've heard of Killdozer and Wheels of Terror but haven't seen them, so might check them out. To be honest, I don't think there are too many possessed car movies out there, which is a pitty, as it's an excellent idea.

Herbie just jumped into my mind, but I don't think I'll go there.

Herbie always scared me when I was little, so to me "he" is more Evil than Christine or The Car. That would be a cool scene where it's Herbie vs. Christine and She takes him out but leaves enough for The Car to come along and finish the job.

Karr, from Knight Ridder, only wanted to harm folks. And Karr coulda probably taken out The Car.

I am ashamed that I am correcting you but it was KITT, an acronym of Knight Industries Two Thousand. I will now go stand in the corner.

K.A.R.R was an acronym for Knight Automated Roving Robot. It was K.I.T.T's evil twin.

It first appeared as an identical car in Trust Doesn't Rust - Season 1, Episode 9 with the only difference being a yellow voice box inside when KARR talked.

It is said that some footage in the end this episode was footage taken from The Car.

It appeared again in K.I.T.T. vs. K.A.R.R. - Season 3, Episode 6
this time it was two toned and had a yellow front scanner and voice box.

..like for example, Moochie Welch gets hit and run over repeatedly like 15 times. In the movie, he was just crushed against a wall. And instead of suffocating Darnell against the wheel, Christine drove through his house to get him. (sound familiar?)

reply

I disagree about the book being better for one reason. In the book, Christine is basically driven by a ghost; whereas in the movie The vehicle itself is actually the entity with consciousness.

There was a REALLY bad movie in 1983 called "Nightmares" that was sort of a Creepshow/Twilight Zone ripoff. It featured 4 different "episodes" in the same movie. One of them was about a priest who had lost his faith and was leaving town in his car when he's suddently terrorized by a killer black truck with an upside down crucifix hanging from its rearview mirror.

Trust me, this movie is DUMB, but a lot of people like it. The episode before the killer satanic truck features a videogame episode starring Emilio Estevez.

reply

The part with the truck is almost note for note a horrid version of The Car. That's the one with Lance Henrickson, right? Hard to say since there's been a few latenight cable knockoffs of this gem. The Emilio Estevez one I've seen also as a latenight cable spot (this one I liked...he made it to the last level only to get stuck in the game until someone else does it). They must have broken up the episodes of the movie into shorter spots for cable.

Just my one cent since I can't afford two.

I really liked "Nightmares". The first 3 stories were great, especially the evil video game.
I liked the evil truck one too. I wish I could find this on DVD.
I didn't like the evil rat one that much, though I must admit it left an impression!
I've never looked at 'house mice' the same way again.

I think all of the major ones have been mentioned, but to my memory the movie that seemed to kick off the whole genre was Steven Spielberg's 1971 made for TV movie Duel starring Dennis Weaver. Although it's not implied that the truck is driven by metaphorical evil, we never see the truck driver's face and hence the truck itself takes on a demonic character all its own. Classic movie that is extremely taught with tension and great driving sequences. A glimpse of the brilliance to come from Mr. Spielberg.

The Car is one of my favorites from youth. The end creeped me out for years!

el_quinto_sol, that was the very first evil 'car' movie I've ever seen. DUEL is still a good tv film to watch. And its dinosaural death scene was excellent.

theres the really bad TV remake of Maximum Overdrive called 'Trucks'

if i remember correctly, i think there is a movie called "The Cars That Eat People" lol i remember the title, but ive never seen the movie (sounds like a blast)

reply

"Trucks" must be really bad if it's worse than Maximum Overdrive.

Seeing Mr. Mighty Duck Emilio Abdul as some kind of action hero is just hilarious. He's about 5'6" if he's lucky.

reply

I saw The Cars that Eat People at a film festival back in the mid 70s when it came out; I think it was Australian. Spoiler Alert I guess: It's not about demonic cars, but a town of crazy people who kill travelers with rigged cars for their stuff. Though I remember that the locals' cars were all decorated with spikes and random metal (I think there was one with sharp metal teeth on the grill and the hood opened and closed like a chomping mouth).

A bunch more:

The Wraith (1986)

It's a little bit of a stretch, but Repo Man (1984) involves a car carrying strange cargo that kills people.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087995/

And, just because I can't resist polishing off the sheen family trilogy...

Charlie Sheen stars in a made for TV car flick called The California Kid (1974), whereby a small town sheriff is pushing people off a cliff with his souped up Plymouth Belvedere.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071268/

Don't forget Death Proof (2007), the Tarantino segment of Grindhouse (2007).
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1028528/

An episode of the original Twilight Zone called "You Drive" is about a guy who comits a hit and run... only to find himself pursued by his own driverless vehicle.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0734694/

Another Twilight Zone episode called "A Thing About Machines" features a killer car.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0734551/

An episode of Futurama called "The Honking" parodies both The Car and Christine (among other things) and has multiple killer-car references.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0768399/

There's also a really fantastic episode of Archie's Weird Mysteries called "Driven to Distraction", where Archie pays more attention to his car than his friends. Eventually, the car turns evil and tries to kill everyone:)

A lot of strange things happen in this world. Things you don't know about in Grand Rapids.

Two favorites of mine are Duel, which has already been mentioned, and Death Car on the Freeway (http://chatanuga.org/DCOTF.html) where a maniac in a van lures lone women drivers into making aggressive driving moves towards him and then he goes into a fit of road rage and either runs them off the freeway or into accidents with other cars.

reply

There's a movie that I think somewhat falls into this category. It's about a car (it's being driven by someone, but I don't think we ever see who) who kidnaps a man's child. The entire movie is this father chasing this black car all over the state, killing a bus full of children, all sorts of random passerby, an entire factory. For the life of me I can't remember the name of it, but I think it was from the late 70's to early 90's.

Anyone know what it is? It's driving me crazy. no pun intended.

reply

Sounds like Wheels of Terror.

reply

Yep, that is Wheels of Terror. The unseen driver kidnaps children. But it's a female school bus driver who gives chase after witnessing one of the kidnappings.

awesome thanks. i had thought it was an older movie, but apparently it was just really poorly done. was only 9 when i saw this so the details were more than a little sketchy.
