The Meaning of Candleshoe

Who or what is "Candleshoe"? I have only ever seen portions of the movie now and again, never the whole thing.

It's the name of the stately home

It's the name of the mansion in the book "Christmas at Candleshoe", which the movie is very, very loosely based on.

In fact, other than the house, the financial problems, the old woman and the orphans, the entire story is different. In the book, while an American couple is visiting, thieves break in, looking for treasure and it's mostly the kids that defend the place with bows and arrows. Unlike the movie, the treasure isn't money.

In the book, Christmas refers to the last name of an artist who painted several works that are a plot point in the book.

Candleshoe is also an actual "wapentake" (subdivision of a shire) in the county of Lincoln, England:

The ending "hoe" in the names of English towns is derived from "hove," or "hoof" --- therefore the town "Cloveshoe" (more ancient name --- "Cloveshove") would have been named for / refers to a "cloven hoof."

The name "Candleshoe" or "Candleshove" may have derived from the practice of making candles, or candle-holders, from sheep's or goat's hooves !

Either funky or offensive, depending on your tastes:

Variety of "candle hoofs" here:

J'ai l'œil AMÉRICAIN !
