Not overrated... but terrible!

This movie has the production values of a porn flick, I'm thinking Alpha Blue. How can this be considered a masterpiece. I've seen silent films with better filmmaking and this was made in 1974! The main problem I have with this film is that I don't really get to know any of the characters nor do I care about them. We are thrown into a plot with these caricatures. They are all one-dimensional, they speak exactly what's on their mind at all times.

It's a terrible movie. Not overrated but terrible. Sometimes when you see a "classic" you might find it overrated, but eventually you catch on. But not here. This is just a shamless flirt with cinephiles (all the refrences to Italian cinema) and lovers of epic cinema - the story spans from WW2 to the 1960s yet I feel the characters are standing still throughout the whole thing.

Is that supposed to be some sort of harsh condemnation of this film? Because anyone who has spent anytime studying silent film will realize that filmmaking then was, in many ways, just as complex and advanced as filmmaking today - in fact, they did some things better than today's filmmakers.

Filmmaking has changed over the years - it hasn't gotten better. We've improved some techniques, but other techniques have been neglected.

That is to say, it's been 80 years since the silent era and yet there are quite a few silent films that are just as complex and well made as anything being made today. That's not a condemnation of filmmaking today, but rather a statement of the greatness of such silent filmmakers as FW Murnau, Fritz Lang, Josef von Sternberg, Erich Stroheim, etc. etc.

I suppose on a clear day you can see the class struggle from here

Not going to insult you (but you are so far off the mark with your criticism!). I believe that if someone tried to 'remake' this movie today, they would eff it up beyond redemption. It's a gem, pure and simple. It's a gem. It's pure and simple. Great.
