One of the best movies ever made..

It may sound strange but this old swedish film is better than almost every single movie in the Imdb-Top250...

See it and be amazed..

I totally agree... Have you read the book though? It's even better... Even though it's a children's book it's my favorite of all the things I've read!

I just hate all of these extroverted, pseudo-bohemian art-school losers...

reply

Absolutely!
I love this movie!

reply

Really? I'm not too found of it. I think its good, for coming from the 70s (which explains Katla), but other than that, I'm not crazy for it.

Well... comapred to the book I think the film has its absoulte losses, but this is a very common problem, especially when it comes to filming the works of Astrid Lindgren. Still the film has in my opinion managed to capture a lot in a most splendid way. I can agree that the special effects are of quite a modest quality, Katla the dragon makes you smile at times and personally, if had cast it, I would never have chosen Staffan Götestam as Jonathan, because I think he is too old and a bit pretentious. ( Jonathan is 13 years old in the book - in other words: He's also a child. Why not bother to find the right actor in a suitable age???)

Still: Along with some half miserable failures (mostly due to tecnical loss) there are also superb actors and some scenes that are just breathtaking. The fire. Karls death. The silent war scene, modest but stylistic in a sort of Kurosawan expression...

Sometimes I think people have to re-learn to watch film without too much editing or effects. Film made in a pre-MTVvideo era, perhaps?

Är Jonathan bara tretton år gammal i boken? Är du säker?

Is Jonathan only thirteen years old in the book? Are you sure?

reply

Japp - Karl är 10 (ska fylla) och Jonatan är tretton.

There was NO actors in suituble age that fitted the character. They had to choose between two 23-year old actors, so they took Staffan.

Simply, one of the greatest films ever made.

Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings Trilogy may have been fancier, but this movie is so much better.

I agree fully. Because, as have been mentioned earlier, of Astrid Lindgren´s truly groundbreaking story. It´s about death and sorrow and how to deal with it. I think the movie does a very good job turning it to life. Too many moviemakers an authors today underestimate children, thinking they can only deal with bright and joyful subjects, and that all children´s movies must have happy endings.
This one deals with the tough aspects of life. There is death and pain but Astrid shows that it´s not all bad. In movies today people die like flies but there´s really not much reflection on the subject. Usually the "bad guys" die by the dozens without the camera pausing for a second, but when a "good guy" dies we have a five minute sorrow scene and then the shows goes on (hate hollywood). Whereas in Bröderna Lejonhjärta death is never taken lightly. A very strong scene is when the rebellion has started and one of Tengil´s soldiers gets trapped in a doorway when his comerades shuts the door on him. The camera zooms in on his face as the mob runs up and kills him. Simple message, some might or might not deserve it, but nobody wants to die.

For these and more reasons i would like to give this film a place in history. I think a remake could be a good thing while there are some big things left out of the story (like the great serpent in the waterfall) but it would have to be made with great restraint and caution. Today´s technology would definitly help to do a more convincing illusion but it must not be the focus of the movie. Also, the choice of actors is importan. I think unknown ones would be best, I don´t think many in the swedish "elite" would fit. Please fell free to disagree with me. Who would be the new Orvar or Sofia?
Well, I think I made my point.

All power for Tengil, our liberator!

This is one of my favorite movies.
I had read the book before and then i watched the movie when i was about ten.(29 years ago)
The german synchronised version although i hardly understood because i was only ten and being dutch my german was not that good.( my english spelling still isn't)
Later i watched the dutch synchronised version .
And now everytime it is on, dutch, german or original version i watch it.
And everytime after i read the book, once or twice.
I sincerely hope my two children will read it as eagerly as i have.
Even though i didn't understand the underlaying message back then and they probably won't either.
But it still is a favorite of mine, even now i'm 39.
Watched it just now, it was on this afternoon.
Must have been the 12 time now.

I just (re-)watched it for the first time in over +20 years.
The story is very sweet, moving in every way, but there's huge gaps.
Take "Mattias" for eg. in the one shoot he's in the opposite valley (As I understood it he lived in) where the villagers are ever-so slightly oppressed by the evil "Tengil" (Who only looks grumpy if nothing else!).

Yeah, sure, the story, that's what ppl keep clinging on to. Sure, great, swell, terrific and all of that jazz.

Movie-wise it sucked!!! Bad props (Swords looked super-light and just bizarre), bad animatronics ("Katja" - *Shiver*), the sudden jumps in the movie ("Mattias" suddenly was injured, severely, no explanation what so ever!), and the fighting-scenes were a joke (Like "I slash you there, stab you in the leg and you keel over, ok?")

I'd love to see this being remade, but not in Swedish (Trust me, it sounds awful in Swedish, and I'm one!), definitely not americans. British would be great.
Revamp of the names would also be nice (Internationally matched ones, also suited to the time-line).
But, that'll never happen, and besides, it's been done before (The story I mean), but in a different tint, another shade, opposite angles etc...

Did you miss the scene where we can see Mattias getting a spear into his chest?

reply

I didn't see it, no...

But then again, there were many weird cuts everywhere throughout the movie.

For the love of god do not remake this! I shudder when I think about how extremely ruined this story will be with today's obsession with too much visual effects. Today fantasy movies in particular (*cough Hobbit cough*) are like watching video games, totally free of charm and focused only on cool effects. Sure, the effects in this may not be very good, but so what? Use your imgination. Astrid Lindgren sure used hers and imagination is what I associate with all her stories.

And change the names? Are you crazy? Swedish is already far too Americanized. It's an incredibly beautiful language... and besides... those are Astrid's names.

reply

It IS really well made but I think best of all, the story's incredibly brilliant to begin with

reply

I totally agree - it is one of the all-time greats. Should be on Top 250 and yes, it's a lot better than most of the mediocrity and crap that is there.
