Kind of boring, but worth seeing

Yes, this 1977 film is long, boring at times, and has been forgotten. However still worth seeing. Directed by Richard Attenborough with an all star cast, I think the original intent was a blockbuster like Longest Day. Since it's about the failed Arnhem operation of Sept. '44 it could never rise to the level of a D Day film. However it's much better than Dunkirk and the more recent stuff being churned out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRzmxox0L0k

The book is outstanding, one of the best war books I've read and is much better than The Longest Day, written by the same author. The movie does a decent enough job, I was surprised how much they were able to include but the overall scale of the real invasion was enormous. Only a miniseries like they did with Band of Brothers could tell the whole story.

Maybe I'll read the book. I just found out Attenborough only directed this so he could get financing for Gandhi; making this was part of the deal. Whenever you have a huge production like this with tons of stars quality tends to be lost in favor of quantity. Anyway, I'm still watching it now. My favorite WW2 film is War and Remembrance (even though it's a 30 hour miniseries).

30 hours? I thought you were exaggerating but I looked it up, the dvd set is over $700 new and still nearly $600 used! I'd like to see it. Hopefully I can find a streaming alternative.

it's on Youtube:

It's worth the 30 hours. I consider it the most authentic recreation of the major events of WW2.

It is a great book. I read it about 20 years ago. I enjoyed the movie a lot, but if you did not read the book, it would be hard to follow.

Oh no, Dunkirk is way better here. But I think the issue they had with this movie was that Market Garden was an abject failure compared to the triumph that was D-Day. It's a fascinating subject but not exactly crowd pleasing material.
