Why is this movie erased from Pacino tributes

Why is Bobby Deerfield conspicuously missing from all of these tributes to Al (e.g. AFI, Golden Globes, Actor's Studio). Does someone "own" the movie, and not let it "out." Maybe I should treat my VHS copy of the movie with more care :)

I agree Bobby Deerfield is a great film. I hope it will be released on DVD. It is available through the Australian version, but it will not play on American DVD players.

Maybe someone will wake up and prepare it for DVD for purchase in the U.S.

Great Film - If I am not mistaken I read where Pacino learned to drive for this film. Since he lived in New York, he did not have a need to drive until this film. Adds more creditability to his dedication to acting. Someone put pressure on the powers that be to release the DVD in the U.S.

It's missing for the same reason 'Revolution' is--everyone hated it when it was released and it's generally considered an embarrassment.

reply

Because it's dull and cliched. It's not like there aren't several dozen better films to pick from, whenever you want to honor Pacino's career.

If you're still looking for the film but can't find it, I can pm you where to get it for free.

Whenever I get the urge to exercise, I lie down until it passes.

reply

Hey, it's worth seeing simply for the Mae West impression.

reply

I love the Mae West impression! Interesting how they tease us by mentioning it early in the film, then he finally delivers the goods later.

Does anyone know if she saw this film and commented on his impersonation? This was released three years before she died – not that this film caused her death (and not that it didn't).

your vhs copy probably is a collector's item. someone who collects vhs tapes might be willing to give you some money for it,like, more than ten dollars. "bobby deerfield" is absent from tributes to al pacino because (a) it bombed at the boxoffice when it was released (b) the critics considered it to be a failure when it was released (c) to this day it is one of the most obscure films in which al pacino has ever appeared and (d) it is so UNLIKE the other films that pacino has made. it was filmed in france and has a swiss leading lady, while pacino is known for gritty, urban dramas filmed in the united states. (it seems that hollywood was going through a weird period at the time. NOBODY seemed to be able to have hit films. some of the most unsuccessful, obscure films were released during this period. dustin hoffman did a forgotten drama called "straight time." robert redford did a forgotten picture called "brubaker." so i guess "bobby deerfield" might be thought of as pacino's "straight time" or "brubaker.")

"Staight Time" is an excellent neo-noir featuring a 21 year old Theresa Russel who will pull at your heart-strings (if one is male), written by the ex-con Eddie Bunker who worked as an adviser on the picture, with the perfect score that beautifully captures the mood of the film by David Shire. Pay no attention to the IMDb rating of 7.4, this is an 8 for those that love noir and neo-noir.

'Cruising' is another one that often comes up missing in his tributes.
