(Sppilers).....SERIOU S flaw with the backup fuse !!

I really do love this movie. Some say it is a little long and the middle part "drags" a bit. Maybe so--but AFTER that part--it is nearly NON-STOP action and suspense.

However---I have noticed a VERY serious flaw, in the bomb, regarding the backup fuse. This is a simple time-fuse, pyrotechnic type, that simply burns, once lit, till it reaches the detonation network in the bomb. It is there as a "just in case", the main electrical detonation fails or is compromised--which of course happens.

HOWEVER--there is NO WAY--a REAL terrorist would design a backup fuse that way. Once lit, it gives from 5-7 minutes of time, before it detonates the bomb. Those few minutes end up being the difference between a few hundred people killed by stampeding crowds--or EVERYONE--in and AROUND-- the stadium dying--when the bomb detonated, its huge blast alone killing many thousands of people, and the subsequent barrage of steel darts--to finish off things...

SO WHY did Dern have such a lame backup system? If black September had the ability to get C-4 type stuff, rifle darts and all of the rest of what he needed...SURELY they could have gotten him so Primacord and a VERY SHORT length of time fuse connected to a cap to trigger it.Primacord burns so fast it can't be seen doing so easily. This would have resulted in near INSTANT detonation of the bomb--accomplishing their goal. The several minutes the time fuse gives ONLY makes sense--in the movie world--since it gives the heroes time to save the day !!

-- why did Dern choose to ignite the END of the fuse instead of some point closer to the explosive?

It's a terrific movie -- one of my favorites, in fact -- but that moment always strikes me as incredibly contrived.

(Or could you plausibly argue that, in his dying and weakened state, Dern was only able to reach the furthest tip of the fuse... or something?)
