Handsome?

Ok I watched this film after missing the first half hour...it was ok, light entertainment but nothing I'd watch again.

One thing that confused me though was why the coach continued to call one of the players "handsome" It just struck me as odd. Or was it his nickname in the first half of the film??

ehh, it was probably a nickname. People call little kid's "handsome" all the time

Hey coach take a walk you've been fired!Kelly Leak

Yeah but its usually to babies or toddlers not really to pre-teenage kids. I'm not suggesting anything...I just found it a bit strange especially seeing as the coach was so new on the scene.

he was referring to Miquel as 'handsome'

That sounds very dated.

Obviously it's an attempt by the director to imply that he is a pedophile

You've figured it out.

reply

You're the only poster who has implied such a thing. The OP missed part of the movie and asked an innocent question-there was no implication in that post or the one's following that anyone thought the director was trying to imply something sexually. It is unusual these days for a "stranger" to nickname a kid "handsome".
Of course there's always the chance that you're bored and making a lame joke.

It was a common expression that grown men said to young male kids to get their attention, challenge them to complete a task, while possibly boosting their confidence at the same time.

In other words, if some grown man said to me when I was 8 years old in '77, "Get over here handsome and field the ball.". You understood it as, "Hey kid it's time for you to step-up and field a ball, nothing personal though." That's all... nothing more than that.

I've done some Assistant Coaching for my son's team and we'd call every player whatever came to mind (as long as it was clean, of course). "Hey Stretch, good one!" "Hey Boommer, toss me a bat!" Calling someone Handsome was probably just something that came to mind. Beats calling him Ugly.

As a side note, I've been calling on of his friends "Conover" as long as I can remember. This was born out of him looking like author Ted Conover.
