Maybe one of the best independent movies ever!

For all who know that movie! What´s your opinion about it. Well, at my point of view, this "classic" is one of the best independent movies ever. There is this dogma - camera style, and the number of actors (I remember eight)- at first this Ernest Hemingway like grandfather (He says nothing)...This is low-budget art in perfection.
My verdict: seven stars of ten.

Wow, what a rave review. How kind you are. The 1970's did have this under-ground low budget quality horror film style that AXE reigns supreme in. That grainy, B-Grade, Drive-In movie style that seems to have fallen into the sea of forgetfulness.

I loved what the the makers were able to do with what little they had. Did you know that this film was filmed with only ONE camera? And that single instramental musical score, how effectivly errie it is.

Who was your favorite character? Who was your favorite bad guy?

I have a personal interrest in this film, because my father played in it as Lomax, the one who got killed and then drug into the bathtub.

I, too, think this is an undiscovered classic. The minimalism of the production really helps it. I love the bad guys, esp. Lomax! Although Stele has some good lines.

Anyone know what became of director Frederick Friedel? I am doing a documentary on grind house/drive-in movies, and would love to interview him! I am trying to talk to people who have never been interviewed about their films before...any help would be appreciated.

I actually met the films producer. He gave a lecture for one of my college classes.

wow, how wonderful!

Has your dad continued in acting? is he still alive? (that didnt mean to sound rude :P)

reply

Oh yes, he's still alive. He's in his early 70's though right now. He did some tv acting on some old episodes and did commercials, but didn't continue in any feature films. He went into radio and had his own radio show in Little Rock, Ar. and he got to interview Elvis Presley in 1956. His interview was recently discovered and released by RCA on collectors edition CD's.

I just discovered this movie was refered to and a poster for it was on THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE Behind the scenes stuff on the DVD. They were talking about other movies that were influenced by the Chainsaw film, and that's when they showed the AXE movie poster under the title CALIFORNIA AXE MASSACRE.

Isn't that COOL?

Couldn't THE AXE be re-released as a GRINDHOUSE CLASSIC?

reply

Wow, how brilliant, I mean you see obscure little films like this and you wonder what ever happened to the people in it, and if they remember much about it, what has your dad said about it? Does he realize uit has a small fan base these days?

reply

Believe it or not, he's never been one for horror movies, and when I was young, he'd question my taste for them. He'd ask how could I watch such things and I'd ask how could he STAR in such things. LOL.

Anyway, he's proud to have been able to fullfil a dream of his to be on the big screen, and he enjoys showing it to close friends from time to time. I told him that it's growing and developing a fan base and he's kinda suprised. It was even recently released in the UK as a special 2-Disk special edition. I dont even have one of those, as I can't even find out what the extra's features are.

He has some cool memories of this film, like when the Character Lisa was dragging his body to the bathtub to chop him up, she accidently drug him over a large splinter that went into his backside. He remembers screaming in pain, which suprised everyone cause he was suppose to be dead.

Hi there OneWay guy,

I really don't want this to sound rude, I just have an observation:

I've been to your website, which is very good, by the way, and your website is all about the Christian views on movies, yet you have a yen for these low-budget, grind-house, 3-B movies.

I just think it's interesting. I happen to have a Master's degree in theatre and I love classic literature and plays, but I also love low-budget, grins-house, 3-B movies. The more "B", the better. Is this the dichotomy of man? The multi-faceted planes of our personality?

I also think it's great that your dad played Lomax in Axe. He was SUCH a smarmy, unctuous character. One thing that I don't think has been brought up is that Lisa, while her actions were extreme, was simply defending herself.

Don't mess with a woman who knows how to swing an axe, boys!

Talk about a late response. Sorry. I really don't have a thing for movies like this. I do not watch exploitation films. I only support AXE because of my dad's connection to it. It was just released on bluray by SEVERIN FILMS and recieving rave reviews by critics of these type of movies.

I personally prefer suspense thrillers, but can no longer watch and enjoy exploitative horror films. They usually contain content that makes me as a Christian very uncomfortable.

Dad's doing well, and recently enjoyed filming an interview for the AXE bluray special features.

I love the bleak despairing atmosphere of this film. The grim plight of poor unhappy Lisa who's resigned to taking care of her invalid grandfather really sticks in the memory.
