SEVERIN FILMS has announced that AXE will be a Special Edition Double Feature with KIDNAPPED COED, also by Frederick Friedel and starring Jack Cannon.

No release date has been announced for AXE on bluray, accept sometime around July or August 2014.

More information is coming out. Did you know that the director Frederick R Friedel, also made KIDNAPPED COED? Both films star Jack Cannon and were filmed in and around Charlotte, NC.

Frederick made a brand new film, using the plots from both films and created a new twist. jack Cannon's characters in both films are now twin brothers who were separated at birth. They are now grown up and both go on a murderous rampage on the same day, bringing them closer and closer to crossing paths for the first time. This whole new edit is called BLOODY BROTHERS and will be included on the upcoming bluray/DVD as a Special Feature.

That makes the upcoming release a TRIPLE FEATURE!

This weekend, the HD premier of AXE will be played at the Charlotte Horror's MAD MONSTER PARTY FILM FESTIVAL, on Saturday, March 28 at 1 pm. Several cast & crew members will be there as well to celebrate.

This is a GREAT kickoff tot he release of the bluray.

ALSO: A new special feature has been announced for the bluray: the complete NEVER-BEFORE-RELEASED MOVIE SOUNDTRACK to AXE.

Yay! So this is officially happening? I'm glad I didn't dish out $40+ for the DVD then, although I considered it several times.

I am SO excited (and again, so glad I didn't shell out for the DVD when it was out of print). Anyone know if it'll be available at places like Barnes & Noble? I know some of them carry Severin titles as I've seen them there before. I saw the signed poster+Blu-ray pack on the website and was tempted, but I'm not a huge enough fan for that; I do like the movie a lot though.

Severin is releasing them THIS Tuesday, December 8, but everybody else who sells it has a street date of December 15....ONE week later.

Frederick Friedel's Axe has gone through many hands and several changes over the years. I am proud to say I have followed it from it's 35 mm projection on a drive-in screen in 1977 in New Orleans, to several bootleg low quality edited VHS, to a cleaner DVD Special Edition from Something Weird Video and FINALLY a Fully Restored HD Bluray from Severin Films. In all it's variety of presentations, I can honestly say the HD 1080p from Severin is the BEST Axe has ever looked. The image is sharp, crisp and clean and the sound is the best transfer from it's original source you will ever hear.
After receiving my bluray from Severin, I immediately began comparing it to the older DVD from SWV. Already, it looks like a brand new film. Colors are a bit bolder and pop more, and details are sharper. However, the only drawback to a purer image from the original negative found in Harry Novak's office, is the obvious wear on the film itself. Dirt and artifacts continue to pop and collect on this beautiful transfer from Severin. The image has been restored, but not cleaned up. (EDIT: Severin has told me they have cleaned up most of what they could, but Harry Novak never protected his negative as most studios do. It would have cost thousands of dollars to do a frame-by-frame clean up job, and they simply couldn't invest that much into this release) The video 'noise' was also obvious on the SWV DVD, but since it had fewer lines of resolution, you didn't notice it as much.
This is not necessarily a bad thing for the Severin HD transfer, sometimes the 'noise' adds to the grittiness of the film and maintains it's exploitation low budget appeal, revealing it's true dark nature.
The film might have benefited from an occasional sound boost during certain scenes of dialog, but this is not the fault of the transfer, this was a fault of the original film itself. Severin has done their very best and have done an amazing job on this film, and given it's amount of bonus features, it's obviously a labor of love and respect, and not a throw together quick release.
I applaud this presentation and encourage fans everywhere to add this long lost treasure to their collection.

I just ordered a copy from Severin's website. I almost went to Barnes & Noble to pick it up, but when I saw they had copies for the same price that were signed by the director, it made sense to order it online. Pretty good deal! I'm excited to get it in the mail this week.
