What an abysmally untalented child actor.

What an abysmally untalented child actor. Her shrieks, crocodile tears and over-emotive faces were stunningly bad elements of an already stunningly awful film.

Yes. Swift sabotaged the movie. She was terribly miscast.

i think the casting decision was probably based on her 'weird eyes' along the hopes of having a linda blair type deal going on. unfortunately, it didn't work.

reply

She wasn't bad during the hypnotism scene, she actually did quite well, she was bad during the regular dialogue scenes though, she was whiny.

I loved it and found the scene of Audrey burning in the car terrifying. I was a kid when I watched it though. Reading these comments I can't wait to re watch it.

No other child would've pulled off such a complex role. None of what you described annoyed me one bit, it's a child for christ sake, what do you expect? Remember, it's the 70s, so it's expected. The story didn't connect with you one bit so it's understandable you're going to pick at small things that didn't matter. Shame you didn't find the beauty in the film, instead you were critical of the child's expressions. Give me a break.

They should have cast Brooke Shields as Ivy. She was about the right age, and was so good in PRETTY BABY.

I think the fact that Susan wasn't such a great actor kind of added to the part. The role is really odd as it is, and her delivery of it was strange, yet kind of endearing. I think she did a decent job in a movie that I ended up liking.

Billie Joe Armstrong: That was good explaining, Bill Schneider. You're a good 'splainer.

I don't know what you are talking about! The film itself is kind of lame, but she does better than any other child actor I've ever seen. Only annoying thing is her screaming all the time, but that's the director's fault. I honestly thought she did very good, unlike most other kids in movies. She managed to freak me out, and I'm not easily scared.

I disagree completely.

None of what you described annoyed me one bit,

I am sorry for your low standards. Carry on.

it's a child for christ sake, what do you expect?

A performance.

Remember, it's the 70s, so it's expected.

And with that comment you invalidate your opinion on film.

The story didn't connect with you one bit so it's understandable you're going to pick at small things that didn't matter.

Actually...no. Wrong again.

Shame you didn't find the beauty in the film, instead you were critical of the child's expressions.

The last time I checked, performance is key to audience connection.

Give me a break.

If I could, I would.

I thought the post about Susan Swift's acting was good and interesting but your response was a bit pompous - you didn't make any comment about the film, whether you enjoyed any of it or not, but just made fun of the other poster.

Sorry. Last time I checked, this board exists for the purpose of stating an opinion.

PS: Susan Swift's acting sucks.

I always thought Susan Swift played the hysterical scenes quite well. Even the scene where she's crying, being shaken and yelled at by Marsha Mason, is very good. But she's absolutely awful playing the happy Ivy! She goes overboard with her facial expressions, gestures and speech in every one of those scenes.

reply

Maybe that was the directors choice

reply

Brooke wouldn't have played any differently.

It's true that there's no need to bash child actors.

I thought she did a great job during the screaming and crying scenes. I really felt like she was in danger.

She WAS in danger: in danger of making me laugh.

True, I'm sorry I wasted my time watching it but what I'm most sorry for is the trauma I suffered from her screams. That part worked well enough, they set my hair on end. I'm getting the creeps just remembering.
