Pretentious, Overrated

Oh man, how I wanted Woody Allen to shut his trap. Being neurotic myself, I enjoyed the character, but eventually felt it was over done. There are some very intelligent and funny lines throughout, but for each one, there's something that distracts, like talking to the camera or split screen dual dialogue or Annie's awful wardrobe. (Era maybe?) The movie is pretty good and I can see why some people really love this movie. For me, this was my first Allen film and I just caught it on TCM 31 days of Oscar. I was quite disappointed. Maybe he's an acquired taste? One thing I do know, however, is Diane Keaton was mediocre. Earlier this same day I watched Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore and holy crap it blew me away. Was thinking this movie pretentious and overrated a product of watching a Scorecese masterpiece first? I really wanted to like this hearing it's got a realistic take on life and relationships and while it does and the ending is excellently understated, the movie rambles, is terribly shot at times, and holy crap can Woody Allen just shut up and let the script sink in before turning to the camera to talk to the audience? I'll try it again sometime when I feel like listening to nails on a chalkboard.

Sorry that this movie disappointed some people. The first time I saw it I laughed non-stop. I bought a copy of it on VHS years ago and I watched it and still laughed. A few years ago I bought a DVD and STILL laugh. Different scenes make me laugh with each viewing.

I know humor is subjective. But this is such a funny movie! Why don't some people like it?
