Scenes from the TV version?

In the TV version, did they have a scene where they were trying to come up with other ways to rescue the passengers, including a scene where they considered a "universal docking device" or some such apparatus or was that a different movie?

I don't recall such as scene in the extended network TV version, so you may be thinking of another movie.

You're thinking of the 1983 TV-movie "Starflight: The Plane That Couldn't Land" which coincidentally was directed by the same guy who directed Airport '77, Jerry Jameson.
