The Best Airport Movie

For me this was the best.....I got bored with Airport as nothing exiting happened until way after the middle of the movie. Airport 75 was a bit better but the scenes with Nancy in the cockpit just dragged on and on. And Airport 79 i dont really need to say anything do i? Ths one was action from the begining and we actually got to see a crash!

I agree. I wasn't crazy about the original Airport film, either. I thought the performances in both Airport 1975 and The Concorde: Airport '79 were hokey. However, the performances in Airport '77 are quite believable, especially Jack Lemmon's performance.

reply

I agree too. Airport is often the "flagship" of the series, yet this one was the best. Unfortunately, most people remember this as a series of movies rather than individual adventures.

I still pick the first as the best, but '77 is a worthy (and clear) No. 2 above the rest, and if you prefer this one above all there's nothing wrong with that either.

'77 was much better than it should have been. Lemmon was certainly excellent, but other veterans also helped quite a bit - McGavin, Walsh, Grant, Lee, De Havilland. I think they helped overcome the standard hokeyness in these types of films.

Just consider that the roles filled by Darren McGavin and M. Emmet Walsh would usually have been filled by two-bit actors - that helped elevate the proceedings considerably. (Lemmon's contribution was obvious.)

The cast of Airport 77 lift the film above the usual soap opera disaster cliche's.
Jack Lemmon is fabulous as the pilot. It is always great to see James Stewart in just about anything.
Christopher Lee is also very good as is his spoiled b*tch of a wife Lee Grant.
Olivia de Havilland and Joseph Cotten are teamed up together again after Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte.Even though Olivia hasn't a lot to do in the movie her reaction to Dorothy's death is just heartbreaking and so realistic and also the shot when she and Joseph Cotten are looking over the ocean after the rescue always upsets me.
Add Darren McGavin, Gil Gerard and Maidie Norman, and of course Mr Petroni himself George Kennedy.Even Brenda Vaccarro was ok in this.

The original is still the best, although it does drag and there are many soap opera elements in it, and very little action. If one can get past that, it's a very good movie.

reply

I'll pick the first one as the best by far. The soap opera material is handled very intelligently and allows for many interesting and poignant moments. Helen Hayes and Maureen Stapleton stand out among an excellent cast.

This is far below the first movie, but it's the best of the sequels. Part of the reason is the cast of old favorites.

yeah...i havent seen it...but i must watch it

Yeah i still feel I have a loyalty to the first one which i saw as a kid and recently watched again. I still love it even though I saw some elements that were not the way i saw them as a child.

THis one is the 2nd best to me but then I also thought that you cant compare the two for they both are totally different and each first their time so they both could be considered the best. I just watched this one and saw 1975 last night so I still have 79 to go and i keep hearing its the worst so im expecting that.

I liked this one had more drama, more action more death tolls, realism and the continuuous disaster element of the water and things happening where the first two did not. At least in this the people wre examined more than in the 75 one. Those people didnt seem frightened but this group were scared.

I also liked with this one they made it a private group of people and the look of the plane different than what we normally see. It added a new variety to it.

ONe thing I notice is how they all are called Airport and the first one does show a lot of the Airport and the goings on at one but this one you didnt see much of the airport but just the airplane disaster.

This was such a great "Airport" film. Great cast, awesome special effects, the sets were very cool as was the giant mock up of the 747. John Cacavas did an excellent job with the score. I saw this is the movies when I was five years old and loved.

Airport was one of the first films I ever saw in a theatre. I still remember it to this day and still love it. So glad that Helen Hayes won Best Supporting Actress that year. An excellent all star cast from Burt Lancaster to Barbare Hale. I am not a big Dean Martin fan, but even he is good here. And the soundtrack was excellent as well. Even to this day, it is one on my favorites.

Saying all that I agree with so many that Airport '77 is a close second and in some ways the best in the series. There is action from beginning to end. An excellent all star cast. I am not all that big of a fan of Jack Lemmon but he's really good here. Lee Grant is a blast. So cool to see Christopher Lee, until up until that time I had known from Hammer's Dracula series. Reuniting Olivia DeHavilland and Joseph Cotten who both starred in Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte was a great move. And Olivia's relationship with her companion, Maidie Norman is cute. The final scene between them is heartbreaking.

The disaster with the plane sinking is excellent, and pre CGI. The raising of the plane and it sinking again is very exciting.

Airport 1975 comes in 3rd place. The planes hitting and in particular the getting the pilot into the cockpit is very exciting. Seeing Gloria Swanson was great. She looks fabulous. So glad her last role was so classy. Unlike Joan Crawford's last role in the horrible Trog. Besides Charlton Heston, Karen Black, George Kennedy, Efrem Zimbalist Jr and Roy Thinnes are like "Hollywood Square" roles and that includes Swanson.

The Concorde-Airport 79 is definitely last. I do love the soundtrack. The second best after Airport. Other than that it is a disaster from beginning to end. Second rate special effects and mostly second rate cast. What a sad way to end the series.

You seem to feel about them the way I do. YOu rated them in the exact same order that I did as well.

I always thought the first Airport film was the best. There was so much going on and several little sub-plots and it kept me entertained the whole way through.

I haven't seen A75 for years but I remember it being pretty good. Perhaps I need to re-visit this now that I am older. I thought this film was pretty average with a far-fetched plot despite the stellar cast that was assembled and the Concorde film was just a downright turkey.

When I said I wanted to be a comedian, they all laughed at me. Well, they're not laughing now!

reply

Not a chance. The original Airport was much better.

reply

Only the first one bears at least a remote resemblence to something more, well, dignified. Whether this relative integrity makes it a ´better´ entertainment than the sequels, is of course a matter of debate.

I love the cast in this one but for me it lacks the fear of being up in the air. I would much rather be in a plane underwater than having trouble 30,000 feet in the air.

I have to say Airport was the best..Maureen Stapleton was phenomenal. Airport 77 is a very close second though. I especially like Olivia De Havilland, who is also in The Swarm.
