Patroni was a job hopper

Airport he's a TWA mechanic, Airport '75 he works for another airline, Airport '77 yet another airline. Damn Patroni has itchy feet.

His main job was to show up in each movie (hahaha).

He's a frickin' curse too. The guy's been around more plane crashes than a Kamikaze squadron leader. If I'm at an airport and see Joe Patroni I turn around and head for the bus station.

....and later on he works for Federation Airlines...piloting a SST. Go figure??

I met George Kennedy at a movie expo in New Jersey a few years ago and asked him about Joe Patroni's curious change in jobs. George told me that Joe supposedly received a promotion after every movie. Apparently his Concorde '79 role as a pilot was the hightest of the job promotions.

Maybe when he said it was a promotion, he meant he had a much bigger part in Airport '79. (Though he had much less to do in Airport '77)

Your Kamikaze point doesn't make any sense. Any kamikaze leader would have precisely one crash in there career. So it would only take two crashes to best their record - not a big number.

In Airport '77, they must have been paying him by the minute. If you blink, you will miss him. The writing for his role was really bad, too. He stands there and says he'll be the liaison from the airline to the Navy. "okay. We'll call you the first time we have any questions about how your airplane is different from other airplanes under water. Thanks for coming out."

Kennedy had a lot more scenes in the expanded TV version and its clear most of these had originally been left on the cutting room floor as opposed to being shot after the fact for TV padding. We see him in quite a few scenes before the crash, and the actor who played his son in "Airport 1975" returns again as Joe then has to give him the bad news that he has to miss his graduation when he gets news of the crash.
