Why the Bernuda Triangle?

When the film was released in April of 1977 you couldn't escape the ads on billboards and in magazines plus the countless previews at theaters and on commercials. In all the ads the point was strongly made of the plane crashing in the Bermuda Triangle. This set the viewer up to believe that unusual occurences or ghostly happenings or SOMETHING out of the ordinary would happen. The most suspense they could come up with was seeing water seaping in onto the carpet? I was roundly disappointed that this aspect was not followed up and was simply a device to lure people into the theater.

Yeah--I remember that too. I was expecting something supernatural and gor nothing. It was just used to draw more people into the theatre.

A supernatural horror about like this would be awesome.

I wholeheartly agree with you all. Great poster as well - that too was setting up the huge potential weird, and high strangess aspect-that sadly never materialises. It could have been such a cool film-they really should do a new version-I guess LOST was in a weird way.... Sigh.
I wish someone would remake this even to the extent of setting it in the 70's.
I guess Duncan Jones could do it justice, maybe Richard Kelly ( or maybe not ?!).

A large airplane full of air sinking to the bottom of the ocean and not leaking for hours is pretty supernatural.

Yes it was most definitely a marketing gimmick. I remember well how during the 70's and 80's the Bermuda Triangle, Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot, Area 51 Etc. were huge public interest items. There hadn't been the exhaustive investigations and logical explanations then that we have now and the public didn't have the Internet and resources they do now so there was little info out there that wasn't PUT out there by conspiracy freaks and media hype. While the conspiracy people are still out there the public is much more informed, or at least have the opportunity to be, as there is much more unbiased information easily available now. As kids we especially were fascinated and believed all of these wild unknown and scary things that existed then. Imaginations in adults and kids went wild and those subjects were used successfully by the media to stir interest whether the story actually was purely focused on them or not just the idea that they were being included was enough. Those were really fun days. While it's better to be educated as now it really takes some of the fun out of life.

I'm sure the air traffic controllers would say it disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle.
