Crawford

I really enjoyed the film Aces high but was wondering what happened to Crawford. I have watched it many a time & the portrayl by Simon Ward is superb. Did he just get sent home? o was it likeley he was sent to a mental instutute?

reply

Officers in WW1 who broke down were sent
to resthomes (sometimes even in civilian homes)
or to special intitutions. If you are interested you
can watch Regeneration. It gives a very good idea
how treatment was in those days.

Unless you are a common type suffering from shell shock in which case you might be strapped to a field gun and executed by firing squad.

By common type I assume you mean NCOs and other ranks? As far as I know they did get psychiatric treatment for shellshock in the same way that officers did (this is alluded to in 'Regeneration') but you are probably right in that the authorities took better care of the officers. Psychiatry was in its infancy in those days, and many people just didn't understand things like shell shock, hence the harsh treatment.

"NCOs and other ranks" yes I did, was being sarcastic the poor soldier on the ground dying at the command of the higher ranks

In the TV mini-series The Monocled Mutineer, a British officer was executed by a firing squad; however, the court-martial busted him to the rank of private before they carried out the death sentence. The reason was that they did it that was to prevent the enlisted ranks for knowing that officers can crack under the same mental stress of modern war and to maintain the officers' image that they are made of sterner stuff.
