I have a theory! *spoilers inside*

I've watched this film several times and the more I watch it the more something develops out of it that I hadn't noticed before. Here is my theory you guys and tell me what you think of it.

I always had this theory that Sissy Spacek represents the childhood of Shelley Duvall's character. If you notice the way Spacek acts, she runs around acting like a little child in the beginning. Playing around on the play area outside that bar just like a little kid would. Swinging around on the wheel chairs at work. The way she plays with her food. Her body language is that of a little girl.

They have the same name Mildred. But Pinky-what Sissy Spacek goes by is a little kid's type nickname and Millie-what Shelley Duvall goes by-is just short for Mildred. But they are the same woman just at different stages of her life.

And that the other mysterious woman was Shelley Duvall's mother and the man was actually her father who sexually abused her when she was a child. That's why Sissy Spacek was totally devastated when Shelley Duvall sleeps with that man (and she falls into the pool with that painting inside). That night represents when the molestation began and after that night, Spacek is changed.

After the night that Duvall sleeps with the man-Spacek is now a more bitter and bitchy and wild girl-to me this represents how the molestation effected her as a young girl.

And there were also some other clues. There's a scene people need to play closer attention to. I remember when Shelley Duvall was walking with one of the old people she was telling them a story about her mother bringing her tomatoes and she doesn't like it. Sissy Spacek later mentions how she can't stand tomatoes. And Duvall mentions she was 11 years old when her mother left her. What does Sissy Spacek act just like? An 11 year old!

And Duvall as a grown woman is delusional and crazy and because she's been molested feels the need to have the attention of men all the time that don't really want her and has a view of herself that is wrong. She wants everyone to think she's so glamourous and well liked and men like her despite the contrary. She is a joke to people around her and doesn't realize it. They see her as the crazy girl. And Duvall is so messed up and insecure she craves adoration. Pinky says things to her like "I think you're perfect" that's what Duvall is trying to tell herself because she is so insecure.

And the night that the woman gives birth to a stillborn baby could have bene something else that happened in Millie's childhood that has got to her. And she slapping Sissy Spacek screaming "you should have went!" to me it seemed as if she was really saying that to herself, because inside she still blames herself.

The ending represents the fantasy of what she wants to happen. Her and her childhood self and her mother get together to kill the abusive father.

So basically what I'm saying is Sissy Spacek's character represents her childhood. And it shows that Shelley Duvall is still haunted by her childhood (Sissy Spacek).

Wow. I never thought of it like that. That's an amazing theory! It's starting to come togethor. I love this movie as well. I always knew that Spacek's transformation was what Millie wanted to be. Popular with the guys, and carefree.
That was very intersting. I liked that.
Also, you notice Millie seems to be a bit embarressed about Pinky. Even when she messes up. So, also, maybe, she made mistakes as a child as well.

Great theory. Now, I have a craving to pop the dvd in. Lol.

thanks watch teh movie this time and watch Sissy Spacek's actions and body language. It's like an 11 year old girl. Which is the age we hear Duvall talking about last being left by her mother. And notice how Spacek the little girl seems absolutely devastated and terrified by the idea of Duvall sleeping with that older drunk guy. I think that older drunk guy represents the father and he was molesting her as a child. Just watch the film again. Notice after that night Spacek changes and acts bitter and wild and more rebellious. This is probably as a result of the abuse from her father.

Yeah, I've seen it a couple times. I never picked up on that. But her transformation says it all. Also, when she flips out about her parents coming to the hospital. That was just sad.

It's such an amazing movie. I love it.

Wow, that was truly amazing...SERIOULSY! I have only watched this three times, and because I get so annoyed from not understanding it, I declared I'd never watch it again. I mean, each time, I got nothing...but frustration. I found myself emaling a friend trying get her thoughts on it....because it's one of her favs. In the end, we were equally cluess! However, there's something about your theory that makes more sense than anything I've heard so far. Well....I guess I HAVE to see it again!

I'm just a soul whose intentions are good
Oh lord, please don't let me be misunderstood

thanks. I posted this elsewhere and people seemed to like it. If anything it atlease gives you some food for thought on it so you can watch it again in an entirely different way. Nothing is confirmed about this film at all so all we can do is come up with theories. Hope my theory is appreciated by the same people that felt the way I did when I first saw it. This is a theory I developed after multiple viewings.

Incredible theory!

The part of your theory (below) may also be confirmed when Pinky was sitting on Millie's bed after coming home from the hospital and she mentioned that she thought she was pregnant. Maybe there's some tie with her father molesting her, her getting pregnant, and either a miscarriage or abortion (leading to the bloody slap and "you should have went!") Very interesting...

"You should went" "You never went" doesn't make much of a difference because they would be meant the same way, as to say she didn't do something.

It's a very interesting and good theory. Which makes sence. I have only one question though, What about Pinkys parents, coming to visit her at the hospital?? Where do they fit into this??

They blew up Congress!!! HAHAHA!

Your theory sounds great besides the ending. I'm not sure if I could buy into her childhood self and present day self working together as separate people in a fantasy.

reply

okay that very last part, I was the most unsure about, but it seems to me that Millie is a character that exists in her fantasy world a lot of times and maybe she found a way to live with her childhood self and her mother all at once in peace after killing her abusive father. But yeah I would love to hear other ideas about that.

I still don't see where Pinkys parents fit into this.

i think YOU (for any reason) added the "molestation" element into this.
nothing is suggesting anything about "kid molesting" or rape traumatism, unless you want to see it through some "symbols"(and you could "see" some symbols anywhere, even in "fast and furious").
Your theory is a bit "ego centered" to me.

I still like to think that this is a story about a stupid idiot named "edgar" who is lost in confusion and ethylism ,meet 3 women , see (as we audience do)each of them turning to each other at one time ,and who ends by being killed by the 3 of them, cause the only thing he did was to *beep* them and teach them how to shoot ! ha ha the complete idiot !

the movie is sure very dreamlike, but i think the mysterious apparence of it seems to inspire too many of silly theories...

reply

hey no need to be rude or attack me. All I was doing was giving my theory and saying, "here it is", what is so "ego-centered" about that? This is the type of film where everyone has a theory on it, I was just humbly sharing mine and you had to go and get rude.

still like to think that this is a story about a stupid idiot named "edgar" who is lost in confusion and ethylism ,meet 3 women , see (as we audience do)each of them turning to each other at one time ,and who ends by being killed by the 3 of them, cause the only thing he did was to *beep* them and teach them how to shoot ! ha ha the complete idiot !

Yeah, what a way to put it. You really wrote something enlightening there. I can see you're one to talk about silly theories. I think it's a lot deeper and more complex than you're making it out to be. I see a darker link between the Duvall and Spacek character and the way Spacek reacts to the drunk Edgar guy seems suspicious to me. And I've watched this film several times and picked up different hints and clues that say a lot about the Spacek and Duvall character being linked together and there something dark going on in Duvall's past.

But anyway, either you agree with my theory or disagree with it, but don't go insulting people especially when a film like this is so open to intrepretation. You are the one dismissing everything and just saying, "it inspires too many silly theories", who is the one that seem ego-centered and arrogant then?

Hail to you PromQueenCarrie, you just cracked the combination! I never got to a point where I would sit down and analyze everything I've seen in this movie, but had I done that it would have been something like your theory. Like many other films of this sort, it is about innocence lost and sexual abuse, and the necessity of hiding behind split personalities. I knew this, but you knew how to put it down in words. Good job!

Fantastic and very solid theory Prom_Queen_Carrie. Thanks for sharing, it totally makes sens! :-)
