Willie's Baby...***SPOILERS***

Was it necessary for Willie to lose her baby? That she did, does give the film some credibility for the ambiguous ending regarding Edgar's fate and unified the 3 Women. I just feel that this put a distressing slant on the proceedings that may not have been necessary, and does the child being male also play a part in what Altman's intention was? Would the films ending have had more impact, or be considered more disturbing if the child that died had been female, considering the title of the film and what it was about?
