Oh my God, Criterion's releasing it!

Hooray! Actually, I sent Criterion an e-mail asking them to consider releasing this title some months ago. Wonder if they listened to me...

BUT, we still need SECRET HONOR, BREWSTER MCCLOUD, SHORT CUTS, COME BACK TO THE FIVE AND DIME, H.E.A.L.T.H. OC AND STIGGS, and maybe some of the TV work Altman did during the eighties...

I've already pre-ordered mine at Amazon.com.

If you'll recall, criterion actually put out the original laserdisc for secret honor -- and the short cuts special edition in 1994.
As for brewster, there's always the possibility that mgm might do a special edition for it, since they have the video rights.
HEALTH is another interesting choice, actually. I rented a bootleg copy over a week ago (probably taped from the movie channel or something) and it was interesting -- if not entirely successful (in my opinion). I know that, like 3 women, HEALTH has never been on home video legitimately. And since it's a cinemascope film, it could sure use a nice anamorphic widescreen transfer. An Altman commentary wouldn't hurt either.

this is a great release by Criterion. In regards to the Altman commentary, it is superb.

I saw 3 Women on Criterion weeks ago and I still can't get it out of my head. Each and every Altman film is it's own unique experience. They're so real to life. I recently saw "The Company" with Neve Campbell and Malcolm McDowell, his latest, about a ballet troupe and was stunned, mind you I'm not a fan of the ballet. Anyone who has the patience to enjoy a craftmaker this subtle he makes you forget you're watching a moviedeserves to give themselves a treat with any Altman film. Also, I think I saw that Criterion did just release Short Cuts, hopefully more on the way. What about "Popeye"? Way underrated and that Nillson soundtrack deserves to be issued. I loved the way P.T. Anderson reworked one of the songs for "Punch-Drunk Love"- also a favorite.

Well , if you're the one who gave Criterion the idea to release 3 Women on DVD ,please accept this expression of gratitude ( or would you prefer cash ?). I got my copy last week and I will stand here right now and say that in my opinion ( no doubt that others will contradict me ) this movie is the best thing that Robert Altman ever did ( not to denigrate his other works )and those were the best performances that Spacek & Duvall ever did . So there .

One of my favorite Altman films (saw it in the theatre in New York in '77). My #2 of that year (after Annie Hall). Duvall & Spacek both should have been nominated. After Nashville & McCabe & Mrs. Miller, probably #3 is 3 Women. Love Altman! Totally underappreciated by too many folk who would rather worship Spielberg & Lucas & Joel Schumacher I guess.
