Persona or 3 Women?

I saw Persona first and was blown away, and just finished watching 3 Women today and had the same reaction. I'm not sure which one was better; Persona is more subtle and ambiguous, but 3 Women was even more powerful in my opinion. What are your thoughts about the two films?

reply

They are both great films and I have seen them both several times over the years. 3 Women has the edge of me perhaps because it includes doses of humor that really resonate with me. Also I consider Shelley Duvall's performance the greatest one ever given by actress committed to film. I don't want to slight Sissy Spacek, Bibi Anderson or Liv Ullmann who all do outstanding work in their respective films. Actually few actresses (particularly ones working in cinema today) have never given performances as great as all of these.

Persona kinda sucks, intentionally confusing to try and trick the viewer into thinking it's smarter than it really is. 3 Women ftw.

I actually prefered 3 Women. Persona, while heads above most other films, seemed a little too cerebral and cold which made it difficult for me to connect with it's two main characters. 3 Women was, in my opinion, warmer and more humane in it's characerizations of Millie and Pinky which made them more sympathetic and compelling.

We'll see whose the filthiest person alive! We'll just see!

I just thought it was weird that someone who had seen 3 Women and Zulawski's Possession never heard of Bergman's film

Persona is by far a better movie (and it's not even one of my favorites from Bergman).

Hmmm, I think Persona is more centrally focused on its key point, and probably explores that idea a little better than 3 Women does, but I think Altman's movie probably does a little more all around, and I think I'd probably give it the very slightest of edges overall.

I love both, but I think that projection-identification in 3 Women is magnified and taken to a whole new level. The pace and flow of 3 Women was more satisfying for me and it unfolds as a dream, where things dramatically unravel in the last quarter and personalities shift. Persona went into a different direction after the 'merging' of their personalities. Also, the visual look and the many loveable quirks of 3 Women were truly one of a kind (the decor, the dinner parties, the Lemon satin, Shelly's dress getting caught in the car door, Pinky's personality doing a 180 degree turn after her coma, etc.). These things make me want to revisit 3 Women again and again, Persona not so much.

Persona (1966), not even close.
