Just watched the pilot ep on Netflix...

And Benson made this show! didn't find much of the plot or dialogue funny except for his! Tormenting Jessica's hubby(so bad I can't even remember his name), making that crack about the eggs benedict when Jessica said he could take them home, supplying the Major with bullets and making bomb noises over his head to send him under the table...Hilarious. No wonder they gave him his own show later on, Robert Guillame is priceless. Sadly, I didn't laugh at much of anything else, as much of it seemed trite and contrived. maybe they tried too hard, I don't know.

Don't judge the whole series just on the pilot. It takes a bit to get into the groove, but the show gets better throughout the first season. But, yes, Guillame is amazing.

What's....this....ruckus?

I just saw that ep last night after so many years! OP is right on the money...Benson made the first one :) The only other part I thought was really funny was Danny and Burt fighting with the breakfast foods LOL!

The first few episodes were more or less introducing the characters and setting up their respective storylines. Since Benson's character wasn't in a storyline, he could supply most of the humour by making sarcastic comments about everyone else.

It's interesting to see his character gradually soften up as the first season progresses. In the pilot, he says that Billy is the only one of the Tates who was worth anything, and he doesn't like the Campbells much either. But it slowly becomes clear that he cares about Jessica a lot, and he eventually becomes somewhat friendly with everyone except Chester and Eunice.
