What happened to Max?

He and his Communist comrades were ambushed and killed by a Wehrmacht unit and some Belgian police just after collecting arms from an Allied MTB. This had repercussions later in the series as Albert had tipped a police friend off about the arms drop in the first place, as he'd found out the Communists planned to sieze control of the Candide and the escape line, so used the Germans to eliminate his enemies. The Communists later tried to exact revenge.
