Favourite 10 characters?

Hard to narrow it down but my choices would be:

1. Johnny Larue: The most likeable slimeball in TV history
2. Edith Prickley: Pfft...Ha! SNL never gave female cast members characters as good SCTV did
3. Earl Camembert
4. Guy Cabellero
5. Dr. Tongue
6. Count Floyd: Owwwwwooohhh!
7. Bobby Bitman
8. Bill Needles
9. Lola Heatherington
10. Ed Grimley

My list is pretty much the same, although I'd put Lola up higher. Seeing Catherine in that character was what hooked me onto the show. She was just SO SPECIAL IT'S SCARY!

reply

Please don't forget Pirini Scleroso. The My Fair lady preview is one of the funniest things they ever did - my favorite skit

reply

Not to mention English for Beginners with Lucille Hitzger.

reply

Omg that was the freaking best. When she's coming down the stairs in the gown LOL. And also the skit with Catherine O'Hara - "Can you direct me to a hotel downtown?" "Ee coo ba rucka..." Genius.

reply

Absolutely the funniest ever...but not on any of the NBC dvds...any idea where to find it? Also, remember Andrea as "Adrian" to John Candy's "Rocky"...too, too funny for words...another skit from the syndicated days...damn!

reply

My favorite character is Jackie Rogers Jr. My favorite skit is Swingin' with Mother Nature with his dad. I adore each and every cast member and think they are all geniuses, but for some reason that skit stands out as the funniest thing they ever did. And I can't believe what a nut Short was to really be up in that tree. Granted he was tied, but when he goes to fall he really GOES to fall.

"Pardon me Miss, but I've never done this with a real...live....squirrel!"

Other faves:
Guy C.
Johnny LaR.
The Schmenges
Lola (and her dancers!)
Perini Sclerosa
Bobby Bittman
Rick's Merv Griffin
Dave's Bob Hope
Rusty Van Reddick (both young and old!)

reply

^ LMAO, you have to love the Juul Haalmeyer dancers! The Shmenges were awesome, too. Special thanks to Mrs Vilve Yatchke for de cabbage rolls and de coffee...

reply

I swear to god every time I see the Schmenges at home celebrating some holiday it reminds me of going to my grandparents!! (Eastern European folk)

Juul Haalmeyer was great...I didn't realize til recently Martin Short was a dancer early on in Lola's Christmas special! (with Juul as her new lover). The fingers pointing to the floor is quite a dance move. My hats off to all those nameless guys.

reply

Yeah that was Marty! I didn't realize it either, until I watched the DVD w/ commentary on and Cath pointed him out. Lola's Christmas Special was the best. "Bah lovebug?" "You know what I mean!"

Do your grandparents do the traditional exchanging of socks, too? ;)

reply

Ha ha! No, but the egg thing reminded me how we would crack Easter eggs with someone to see which one wouldn't break, until everyone had a turn. How thrilling to be the one with the strongest egg! lol

How about ROCCO the bad guy in the "As the World Turns" soap opera.
He cracks me up everytime I see him.

reply

Moe Greene!!!!!

Ed Grimley? Please, he doesn't even belong on the same TV

reply

1. Guy Cabellero - just the epitomy of sleaze, and yet you grew to like him
2. Edith Prickley - the sober yin to Cabellero's raging yang, and vice-versa
3. Lola Heatherton (and the Hallmeyer dancers)- if only for "Bouncing Back to You"
4. Johnny LaRue - I loved how he'd do something so over the top...taught me to really appreciate a good crane shot
5. Bill Needle - I just loved watching him blow up, and get his comeuppance with the inevitable failure
6. Big Jim McBob & Billy Sol Hurock - speaking of "blowing up"...
7. The gang at Pre-Teen World - great how they'd be just so earnest. "De-cent!"
8. Maudlin, Bittman, & William B. - "Maudlin's Eleven" clinches it for me
9. Rawl Withers - again, sleaze personified
10. The Mackensie Brothers - I loved how they'd act like brothers, interrupting each other and just goofing around.

and I have no least favorites!

yes, I agree with you about Moe Greene - "Dialing For Dollars" was one of the funniest roles he played - I would love to see those early 30-minute episodes from 1976-1979 put out on DVD! Does anyone know if Shout! Factory or any other distribution company has plans for this?
