THINK about this film and slavery in general? Do you really feel bad for what your ancestors did to blacks, do you care or do you feel it has nothing to do with you?

True they are all dead but there's a question we should address: Would you say that America would be as properous a nation today if slavery in the USA had never taken place?

I know that this post is old and all, but I wanna answer it.

Yes, the US would still be rich. Slaves did not make the US rich, the industrialisation did. Look at Europe, did they have any slaves at home there? No. Are they rich? Yes.

reply

LOL, you're an idiot.

Zay, I hope you sign up, because you KNOW we need you here

reply

uhalf right but the U.S. would not be the same had not slavery occured tobacco and cotton were royaltyamong the south these were shipped to the north where they manufactured it. slavery was the backbone of this country. if it were not for the free labor of africans europeans would have traveled back home native slavery proved failed b/c of easy escape sorry but america would be totally diff.

reply

Europe is also rich because of the profits they made on slavery, as part of the triangle of trade. Look it up. Nevermind 500 years of European colonization of the Americas, Africa, the Pacific Rim, and Australasia.

reply

Many European countries did have slavery: England, Portugal, Spain, France, etc., but they abolished it years before the USA did. Much like with other events later on in world history, Americans were kind of slow when it came to "waking-up" and responding to the call to follow the examples of appropriate behavior towards one's fellow man.

reply

They also had in Africa- and still do!

reply

I think this was an excellent film, and I make sure to watch it whenever it is on. It is a remarkable work, showing the history of our nation. It's not even the history of slavery, but about much of American history, which is largely intertwined.

It is impossible for me to feel bad about what my ancestors did to blacks, as they were Irish and immigrated to this country between the 1870s and the turn of the century. And Irish immigrants at the turn of the century were treated roughly equal to African Americans at the same time. However, even though MY ancestors had nothing to do with slavery, our nations past has a lot to do with me, as even now we have to deal with the fallout of slavery.

reply

"Irish immigrants at the turn of the century were treated roughly equal to African Americans at the same time"

I'm a college graduate and I've never been taught this info on the Irish Immigrants being treated EQUALLY to blacks. I've heard of indentured servants who were freed after 7 years, but they are different from the slaves depicted in this movie. Is that what your ancestors were, indentured servants? If so, those are totally different oppression!

reply

I just finished watching this and I thought it was amazing. In answer to the original poster though, I am a 26 year old white man and I feel no responsibility for the actions of my ancestors, of course it was absolutely despicable the way the black people were treated but I do not feel it has anything to do with me the same way that I don't think the Germans of today should be blamed for the Holocaust. What I think is odd though is that today in Eastern Europe there are more slaves than there has ever been before and this should be given a lot more coverage and attention as it is truly a terrible state of affairs.

reply

Actually, my intent was to say that Irish immigrants were looked down upon and discriminated against in circa-1900 America, as African Americans were. In 1900 America, there were no slaves, and there had not been slaves for 35 years. However, ex-slaves and their children were still looked down upon and disciminated against, abused, lynched, etc. So I was not comparing the experience of Irish immigrants to slaves, at least at the time my ancestors came here, because there WERE no slaves at that time. Just certain classes of people (African Americans, Irish Americans, Polish Americans) who were looked down upon by a "ruling class".

reply

[deleted]

Te_Marie, The Irish were socially relegated by White Americans as similar to Blacks. Actually every new group that immigrated to the United States was treated as such and experienced xenophobia. It's not the same as being Black, because Black is the antithesis of White, but the Irish were not accepted with open arms, but they still had privilege over Blacks because they looked White. Eventually, the Irish gained social mobility and were accepted as "White" by Whites. With a booming economy, the U.S expanded its workforce by hiring more Whites (European immigrants) and excluding Blacks. I also graduated from college.

Did you ever take any classes on race and ethnicity or gender and class? I am absolutely obsessed with race, gender and class. There's a book called How the Irish Became White...I have it somewhere in storage and I'm going to get around to reading it one day.

reply

Te_marie, who ISN'T a college graduate? It's not as if it's a mark of distinction anymore.
Google "No Irish Need Apply."

Get me a bromide! And put some gin in it!

reply

spmecevoy,

You really need to stop that lyin! Irish people werent treated roughly equal to African Americans at the time. Thats a bunch of BS!

reply

What they did to Africans if the worse genocide in History. For every one black that made it alive to the America's Four died!

reply

My ancestors didn't do squat. Why are the black people the only ones still going on and on about what happened? There are Holocaust survivors around today, some talk about what happened due to so many people actually thinking it didn't happen, and they are not talking about sueing the companies who profited from them, or STILL blaming white/german people for what happened. It's very annoying how we all have became so politcally correct we don't want to be honest, don't want to offend any other race; God forbid. There are white people, black people, asian people etc. Why are we all of a sudden "watching what we say"? I am a white woman, not caucasian. I have never been to "caucasia" and don't plan on it. Just like black people have not come from Africa. If you do some research you'll find that the actual African's HATE that black people in the U.S are called "African Americans". There that should piss some people off, and probably make a lot of white people think, hey yea i agree with her :) But racial tensions have and always will be around forever. We all want our own race to succeed and noone else's.

reply

Maybe b/c modern day slavery still exist today as well as oppression against blacks. Actually, I know more non-blacks who complain about what the WHITE MAN did to them, so just because you don 't know of any complaining doesn't mean there aren't any. And how do you know what your ancestors did?

reply

I am a white male (half anyway, white, not male) and do not feel guilty about what people that may or may not have been related to me did hundreds of years ago, or even a hundred years ago.

With that being said, I do have great sympathy for African Americans and the struggles they have overcome in the past hundred years, African Americans where not treated with the same humanity as Anglo/Wasp Americans....

However, I think that it should be said that Americans and "whites" are not the only people/group to have enslaved or treated other human beings this way but sometimes it seems like white americans suffer the burden more than other groups or countries. It's not fair, its not fair for whites or blacks, or browns or yellow or any other race, but it has been a fact of life for a very long time and YES even Africans had slaves and decimated whole populations of people.

Its a sad mark on our history as humans, one we should never forget, but should learn to get past.

Ever here the expression from jews "Never forgive, never forget" about the HOllocaust?

The Jews did want and recive justice for what happened and still want war criminals hunted down.

"We all want our own race to succeed and noone else's"

That is exactly, exactly what Hitler and the nazi's preached. Exactly. Damn the Jews. We want Germany to win. But its not true. There were germans who didn't think that way and SChindler was only one. And whites marched with King.

"Just like black people have not come from Africa. If you do some research you'll find that the actual African's HATE that black people in the U.S are called "African Americans".

A chinese person born in America, is called Chinese after the country. He would be called Chinese American if he never even saw China so would the Irish, German and all others.

The posting was very ignorant.

reply

True, but (according to my Nigerian ex) it's more because Americans generalize the entire continent to represent the same people. It's the same as calling Iraqis "Asian" because Iraq is on the continent of Asia. The vast cultural/national differences deserve more respect than being considered one in the same out of laziness and ignorance.

Why do we have to compare which was worse...The Holocaust or Slavery? They were both horrible crimes to humanity.

It's sickening to watch human beings treat other humans...like they are less than human or worse. It boggles the mind how anyone could have a heart and have any morals and do these things.

reply

Trust me, I know exactly where my ancestor's came from. It's called a family tree which my aunt found our relatives dating back to the 1500's. NONE of us lived in the south or owned any slaves. We have lived in the midwest always.

So your'e saying that you know for a fact that NONE of your ancesotrs lived anywhere else? Slave owners weren't just in the South you know. So,you can account for EVERY SINGLE ONE of your ancestors, that's interesting. I can't say that your ancestors were slave owners or not, but it's just interesting how you can account for each blood line and where they lived or did not live!

Okay, total honesty here.

I remember watching Roots in 1977 when I was in high school. I remember feeling disbelief at how blacks were treated and feeling very sorry.

But I've been watching parts of it for the first time since then on TV this week and the main thing I think now is, the look in Kunta Kinte's eyes is the look of hatred I see in EVERY black person (mainly men) under 30 I see in this world and a whole hell of a lot of the rest of them. Hatred and the "I dare you to look at me wrong or say a word if I cut in front of you or give me a dirty look if act rudely for no reason" stare. It wasn't so back then. Roots seems to have been a turning point, causing much more hatred between the races. What's sad about that is, I think whites were hit over the head with this series in '77 and truly felt some shame. But blacks have since taken the
"I want more, more, more because of slavery" thing too far and whites are sick of it. They lost any good will this miniseries could have sent their way. When I hear Fiddler in the last two eps.(who I remember being my favorite character in 1977) all I pick up on are "the white man.." this and that, it reminds me that is all I hear on from blacks on TV now and it has gotten old. In other words, the sorrow of how badly they were treated has been lost on me because of the way today's blacks act. My change in attitude is strictly because of the attitude "you whites will NEVER do enough to make up for slavery no matter WHAT you say or do." I truly feel blacks will never be happy unless white people become THEIR slaves. Do two wrongs make a right?

Wholy fright do i believe in THAT phrase! Oh and yes i know excactly where my ancestors lived. In case you haven't done your research lots of states were free states. I think what you are getting confused is the difference between slavery and lynching, two TOTALLY different things. So no my ancestor's did NOT own slaves. But let's talk about the black people who owned slaves...

reply

Im not sure if my ancestors owned slaves, but if they did, I would not feel bad for their slaves. Im not gonna feel bad for something I didnt do, but maybe my family did.

Lol! It NEVER fails to amaze me when I read how some White folks REALLY believe that Black people sit around and blame 'the White Man'. I'm pushing 35 and I PERSONALLY cannot recall not once have I heard my friends blame White expressly for their problems. Where does this come from? Lol! I guess from lengthy jail sentences to stubbing their toe in the dark. It can ALL be traced back to the White man! Yikes!

Sheet....my ancestors were Slovakian immigrants that came here in the 20th century. On my grandmother's side, they were Northern abolitionists from Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, not that other PA city ;) Sorry Pittsburgh!)

The slavery era is a dark stain on our history, no question about it. I believe that this series should be shown more often or at least have someone remake it. "Roots" was the first non-fiction book that I read from cover to cover and I was moved by Alex Haley's book. I saw the miniseries before reading the book in 1977 and it was over my head as a 7 year old. (Do the math on my age :)) I saw it a few more times when I was older and was very moved by the series. It came to reinforce my beliefs about what freedom means to me and how, in the words of Abraham Lincoln, "there is no such thing as half slave and half free." (or something like that)

Outside of the casting of Mr. Brady (Robert Reed), I enjoy watching this on repeated viewings. Hell, I'll even buy the freaking DVD set next!

I think sometimes we miss the point. It really does not matter who owned slaves. What matters is that without slavery America might not have become the wealthy place it is today. Without wealth, there might not have been a US Constitution. It takes money to build an empire.

A son inherits both his father’s sins and his possessions. We can’t have one without the other. The life we enjoy today was built in part by the suffering inflicted upon others. If we are unable to acknowledge that then we have no right to question why blacks are not doing as well as we think they should be doing.

My brother once said, "we feed upon death". It may also be true that we feed upon the lives of others as well. The best we can all do is remember so that we don’t reinvent.

i remember seeing this on tv when i was seven years old and being absolutely horrified. of course i knew about slavery, but at that age i guess seeing it dramatized had more of an impact. now watching it again, thirty years later, i have the same reaction. it boggles the mind that a society could treat another group of human beings that way. it was roughly around this same time that they first aired the mini series "holocaust". these two programs were my introduction, at a very tender age, to the evil that people are capable of.

How many are actually paying attention to this?

There are African Americans, Mexican Americans,
Asian Americans, Arab Americans, Native Americans, etc.
And then there are just Americans.

You pass me on the street and sneer in my direction.
You Call me "White boy," "Cracker," "Honkey,"
"Whitey," "Caveman" .. And that's OK.

But when I call you, *beep* Towel head, *beep*
Camel Jockey, Beaner, *beep* or *beep* ... You call me a racist.

You say that whites commit a lot of violence against you,
So why are the ghettos the most dangerous places to live?

You have the United Negro College Fund. You have Martin Luther King
Day. You have Black History Month. You have Cesar Chavez Day. You have Ma'uled Al-Nabi You have the NAACP.
You have BET.

If we had WET (White Entertainment Television) .. We'd be racists.
If we had a White Pride Day .. You would call us racists.
If we had White History Month We'd be racists.
If we had any organization for only whites to "advance" OUR lives ..
We'd be racists.

We have a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, a Black Chamber of
Commerce, and then we just have the plain Chamber of Commerce.
Wonder who pays for that?

If we had a college fund that only gave white students scholarships
... You know we'd be racists. There are over 60 openly proclaimed
Black Colleges in the US , yet if there were "White colleges" ..
THAT would be a racist college.

In the Million Man March, you believed that you were marching
For your race and rights. If we marched for our race and rights,
You would call us racists.

You are proud to be black, brown, yellow and orange, and you're
Not afraid to announce it. But when we announce our white pride ..
You call us racists.

You rob us, carjack us, and shoot at us. But, when a white police officer
Shoots a black gang member or beats up a black drug-dealer running
From the law and posing a threat to society .. You call him a racist.

I am proud.
But, you call me a racist.

Why is it that only whites can be racists?"

In case you haven't realized it is not white history month every month. But it does depend on where you live, my daughter is a freshman in high school and they are talking about african/asia world ALL YEAR LONG. Not once in there is about white people. Just trying to open SOME eyes to how the rest of the world see's things, but then again when you are narrow minded and think only for your own race/people you can't see it any other way. reply

I first off feel betrayed because this film is not true as they claimed that it was. Alex Haley plagiarized some white anthropologist's novel.

Second off, I acknowledge that despite this it's a powerful story and I understand and appreciate what it did for black pride and all that good stuff.

Third, I don't really feel guilty because A) I live in the north B) My ancestors were in Germany and Austria at the time. And why should I be blamed for my ancestors? For all people and I know, I would have been helping to work the Underground Railroad at the time.

reply

[deleted]

Well, that's what the OP asked, heh. "Do you really feel bad for what your ancestors did to blacks, do you care or do you feel it has nothing to do with you?" I really feel that it has nothing to do with me, for the reasons that I listed.

I don't know, I think that some people use slavery as an excuse not to move ahead. There have been a lot of disenfranchised ethnicities--not just black people.

reply

To OP question - I don't know if I feel badly at how my ancestors treated blacks because I don't know how they treated blacks. I don't know if my ancestors believed and supported slavery or if they were abolishonists who spent their lives fighting against it. I just don't know. I do know that the apathy that went on by some people was just as disgusting as those who supported slavery. I do feel ashamed at the human race watching this movie. Who the hell hunts another human to put them in shackes and stack them like sardines to cart them half way around the world to be their personal servant? These people were animals to do that and to somehow justify it.
I had not ever seen Roots before now and was really glad to find it on all day on Sat. I tivo'd it and spent all day Sun watching it. I loved this movie. I loved the love story between Kunta Kinte and Bell and that the warrior spirit of Kunta's Mandinka people was passed down generation to generation.
I also will admit that I was completely ignorant of the real use of the hsitory of the "n" word and its true connotation. I have been profoundly affected by watching this movie.
I may add that I'm not at all bothered by Mr. Haley plagerizing an anthopologist. Who cares... the story is still one that needed to be told.

reply

On that note shouldn't black people give respect and gratitude to people who's ancestors fought and died to abolish slavery? I mean those people are the biggest reason blacks are living free today. You'll never see a black person make some sort of memorial in dedication to what they accomplished. As well as no black person will show any disdain towards the black slave traders who sold their ancestors to begin with.

What is with this GENERALIZATION of ALL Black people? How do you KNOW what Black people will and will not do? Once again something else that NEVER ceases
to amaze me. The notion that Black folks have a HIVE mentality. Like Al Sharpton
and Louis Farakhan, once they say something it goes for ALL Blacks. Because there
is no way we can be INDIVIDUALS. And to answer your question let me use the same
logic SOME White people use. In the same way you should not feel guilty about slavery because you didn't own any slaves. That's the same way I should show my
gratitude, because I never was and never will be a SLAVE.

BTW:I hate slavery and bigotry in ALL forms. From what England did to the Scots and the Irish to what's going on in the Sudan today. Also, I for one do hold those tribes accountable for selling other Blacks to Europeans. But that was the custom of the day. If the European was so 'civilised' and 'Christian' and 'morally superior' why did they purchase slave in the first place. I'll tell you why...that Almighty Dollar. Like today people bend the word of God to suit their own purposes. There you have your 'disdain' that you said Blacks would NEVER do. While I'm at it let me let the Arab slave traders have it too. See,you can't blame Yahweh, without blaming Allah also. Is there anything else you think that a Black person would NEVER do? How about a Latino, because I am Afro-Latino? No? Good. Have a great day.

Not all white people had a part in slavery. My family did not. And many of the white men were immigrants themselves (at least according to this film). Slavery is wrong in any case, whether it's based on race, religion or political stance. Africans were not the only people ever to be enslaved. Aside from the Holocaust, slavery is the worst thing to have ever happened to anyone. I'm glad neither of these things were something any of my ancestors ever took part in. In fact, I believe many of my Scottish ancestors were indentured servants, which is also a form of slavery.

reply

Most of you are going to think "duh" but I think I figured out why slavery is and always will be a big thing. It lasted FOREVER. The Holocaust lasted a couple years, yes i know lots of people died and it was cruel, but i think if it lasted 150+ years, there might be a bigger deal about that as well. I can't believe the white man and how selfish and dumb they were. I wonder how life would of turned out of women would of been the "in charge" species, or whatever word-for some reason species come to mind??? Anyway, the women in the movie just seem to be more caring and understanding and I HIGHLY doubt a woman would of set someone out to Africa to take all of those people and make them live here. We've always been a nurturing, loving caring kind. Well most of us.

"I was called a racist on a different thread by Labrynth and Btrflygrl is being called racist by soaplvr...It's one thing to express your feelings and another thing to accuse someone or call them names." I have one black friend that I can count on to talk to her about stuff and not offend her or piss her off. Same with me to her, she asks me all sorts of questions and i answer her with no problem, THAT'S how racism will end, with a little understanding of everyone, compasion and love :o)

Whoops i stand corrected on myself LOL, slavery lasted oh roughly 225 YEARS!!!! OMG WTF were people thinking?? This answered my question a couple days ago that i can no longer find about how were the slaves' families already born here, well yea that'll happen when slavery was around since the 1640's! THAT would be a great documentary about slavery in general, how it started, why it started-and you can't say lazy white men lol-everything about it in general. If they would, i'd like to see nobody's do that movie. I don't like seeing famous people doing movies that like, it's not realistic. If they have made a movie-not roots-let me know :o)

WWDSD?

Umm, slavery's been around forever and is still around today. The triangle trade was just one of many forms of it.

Anyway, I'm sorry, but there's no comparing the triangle trade to the Holocaust. Slavery was an economic enterprise; the Holocaust was a deliberate attempt to kill off an entire race (genocide.) One of the goals of slavery, whatever it might have seemed, was to keep the slaves alive, because a dead slave can't do much work. Plus, a lot of people in the Holocaust were forced to do slave labor, under much worse living conditions.

The problem is that a lot of you (understandably) can't look at this objectively.
