Great DVD

I brought this DVD a week or so ago and loved it to bits. Ripping Yarns has to be one of my top 5 british comedies now. They just don't make stuff like this anymore do they.
Favourite episode is probably Curse of the Claw followed closely by Golden Gordon. What do you folks choose as your fave?

I have the VHS tapes. When I get some bills paid, I'm going to get it on DVD.

Anyway, I get a kick out of Escape from Stalag Luft 112B. Followed closely by Curse of the Claw. Murder at Moorstones Manor is also a hoot.

When was the last time you heard these exact words: You are the sunshine of my life?

reply

I'll be a bore and say The Testing of Eric Olthwaite.

reply

I'd have to go with the pilot episode, Tomkinson's Schooldays. It still cracks me up, even though I've seen it dozens of times.

You really must get the DVDs. Michal and Terry's commentaries are excellent!

reply

I do like every episode although, like most people, i think across the andes by frog is the weakest.
It was months ago since i started this topic and I'm still not bored of watchin this dvd.
I'm only 20 but wish comedy of today was more like this.

Golden Gordon.Whenever my football team has kicked me in the knackers, this one always brings me round

Don't know why so few people rate "Across The Andes By Frog" - it's one of my favourites!

reply

The entire series in order of my favorites:
1. Whinfrey's Last Case
2. Tomkinson's Schooldays
3. The Testing of Eric Olthwaite
4. Murder at Moorstones Manor
5. The Curse of the Claw
6. Escape from Stalag Luft 112B
7. Roger of the Raj
8. Across the Andes by Frog
9. Golden Gorden

I understand that a number of people find that last one incredibly funny but I just don't get it. Anyone want to explain why they like it?

I had the chance to rent (hire?) this from the public library a couple weeks back. I loved the pilot episode, Tomkinson's Schooldays, probably because it felt so Python-ish in some respects. I also really liked Curse of the Claw, Murder at Moorstones Manor, and Roger of the Raj. The others were good, but those four especially stood out to me. It's a shame that this program was so expensive to produce, because I really would like to have seen more episodes! It was such a creative idea; you really don't see enough anthology shows like that on TV anymore. (And I really appreciated the show because, at the risk of sounding like a fangirl, it allowed me to see Michael Palin's beautiful face in every episode. Sigh...)

reply

Wish the whole thing wasn't filmed in front of a studio audience. There's enough Python stuff with crowds laughing.

Half hour sketches?

The casting is quite cool (i.e. the head bully, the bank robber), as is the photography

Golden Gordon strikes a nerve with serious fans of every sports team everywhere. The frustration that your team's best years are behind it, the affirmation that management has absolutely no idea how of what they're doing, the futility of being a hapless fan and the reality that the only thing more frustrating than following this horrible bunch of losers is not being able to follow them anymore are all perfectly encapsulated in this episode. Furthermore, it also includes the fan's ultimate fantasy of actually doing something real to help his team win. I did a Google search a while back, and discovered that at least three amateur leage soccer teams from different parts of the world have named themselves "Barnstoneworth United." I do understand that people who are not into sports may not appreciate it. The scene with Gordon smashing the social club to pieces while the bartender numbly looks on is an absolute classic for everyone who has ever been frustrated by his team, no matter what the sport.

I thought the funniest by far was The testing of Eric Olthwaite. I loved the way his father would speak french just to avoid talking to his son Eric. The finest line is where Mr Bag tells Eric "There are some people in this world who are interesting people, you know they're good company, fun to be with, people that make you happy, people that make you feel that life's worth living but you're not one of them Eric"

If you are not busy being born, you are busy dying.

reply

" ' ere, I know you. You're Jean-Pierre Olthwaite's boy!"

reply

I must admit to liking them all, but my top three would have to be "Murder at Moorstones Manor", "Tomkinson's Schooldays" and "Escape from Stalaf Luft 112B".

(Didn't care overly much for "Across the Andes by Frog", however...)
