In the Nude

I'm watching the second disc of the second season and I was surprised when they showed Rowella naked from behind. I thought there was no nudity in British television in those years. A pleasant surprise.

I'm British and of a certain vintage.
There was a LOT of nudity on British TV in the seventies!

If you can't be a good example -- then you'll just have to be a horrible warning.

My knowledge of 1970's British TV is limited to Upstairs/Downstairs and Duchess of Duke Street and I don't remember any nudity, but now I know. I guess in those years the Brits were more sexually liberated than the yanks.

You say that as if America today is more sexually liberal than the UK. Brits were definitely more sexually liberated in those years and they continue to be today.

That's the the conclusion you arrived at based on what I wrote, and you're wrong. The language of the post is quite straightforward.

LOL supergran. I immediately thought of this thread when I read this linked newspaper column from NZ

I just finished watching the series via Netflix, and there was no nudity. We saw a little bit of Morwella's back and we saw her legs when she was removing her stockings.

Did Netflix show a censored version?

reply

I don't think so. From what I understand the Australian DVDs are complete, and that's the version I own. On my copy Rowella is exactly as you describe. Furthermore, I believe the netflix transmission is from the Acorn DVDs, and Acorn is known for distributing complete programs.

Thank you!

Did you realize that Morwella = Veruca Salt?

I thought she looked familiar! (The little B****)

I was very confused when she started coming on to Osborne. At first, I thought she and Morwenna had concocted a plan. Morwella would tease Osborne, Osborne would respond, and Morwenna would catch them together and then blackmail Osborne into leaving Morwenna alone, or even allow her to leave him.

Then, when they actually began their affair, I thought Morwella wanted Osborne for herself. Turns out she's just a grasping slut.

Morwella's husband -- I'm confused about his role, what he knew. Did he think she was pregnant with Osborne's child? Were they plotting together or did Morwella make fools of both men? Or did he think he was the father of Morwella's baby? If so, why would he think Osborne would be willing to pay all that money and not just kick her out?

reply

Do you mean Rowella's husband? I think he believed Rowella was "in trouble" and it was Osborne's child. I don't think he knew she was faking it, though. I don't think he would have gone along with it, for that. He married her for the money, but eventually Rowella's scheming drove him over the edge, lol.

reply

I'm hoping this will be explained in the books. It struck me as strange that he knew Rowella had slept with Osborne before he married her, and then became murderous when she continued the affair.

reply

You could be right. It's been a few years since I read that novel. Come back to this thread when you know the answer.

reply

I will. I've just started the first book, so it might be awhile. :)
