What? No one likes the Pallisers?

I was just reminded of this series and remember how much I loved it! I've watched it 3X and think Susan Hampshire is an amazing actor. Did anyone like this series? What did you think of Glencora's & Plantaganet's arranged marriage?

I just watched the series a few months ago. Susan Hampshire is amazing. I enjoy everything I've seen her in.

Though Glencora was less than thrilled (gross understatement, I know) about marrying Plantagenet, I think they really were a good match.

I enjoy her style very much. And I agree with you they did turn out to be a good match - But (now I didn't read the book and it's on my list to do) after Glencora died, Planty didn't seem overly grieved. Maybe the book covers his emotional state better. Glencora always saved a place in her heart for Burgo though and I think Plantagenet was more resigned to his fate and somehow put all thoughts of true love out of his mind - which turned out very good for him, too!!

I didn't read the book, either, and I've only seen the series the once. I also thought Planty would have been at least a little sadder. I think I was sadder than he was! But some people internalize their grief. Maybe that's just how he dealt with it. I'll have to read the book to find out.

Wow. I really need this on DVD.

I disagree; I think Planty missed Cora very much. There was a scene in which he's standing in front of her portrait, and he looks very sad. Plus, throughout that entire episode, he seems to be trying to find his way in this new aspect of his life without her. Also, keep in mind, we're not given much of a chance to see how any of them react to her death; there's so much in that one episode that is covered: Silverbridge and his American love; Mary & Frank; plus Planty's career plans; and Cora's death. I hated to see the series come to an end; it's one of my favorites.

It's not just one book -- there are 6 books in the series. Planty and Glencora don't appear as much in the books as they do in the series, but the books are still outstanding.

I loved watching my new DVD set of The Pallisers, and never wanted it to end! I'd seen some episodes on Public TV long ago and was amazed at how much I'd missed. I agree, Susan Hampshire is wonderful in her role as Lady Glencora. Wasn't she also in the Forsyte Saga? Her costumes were absolutely beautiful too, and hard to believe they were made for Hayley Mills! Regarding the arranged marriage, they were pretty common in that time. I think it worked because of Glencora's aunt who saw in Planty what she thought would be best for her neice, then spoke to the Old Duke about it, resulting in the marriage. Neither one could see in the other a good match in the beginning, but it was, I think, largely Planty's patience with a young, impulsive girl that turned it around. During their European trip he was so grand about helping her old heart throb, Burgo Fitzgerald, when he was down on his luck at the casino.

She was in the Forsyte Saga, and she was spectacular. I've tried to picture Hayley Mills in the role, but it doesn't work. I'm glad it was Susan anyway-- I watched it solely because Susan was in it, and I would have missed a spectacular series otherwise.

Yes, Planty was very patient. He kind of sucked up his own unhappiness and went straight to dealing with hers. We need more politicians like that.

Sad, but true, Flossie Cat! And what Golden Years they were! I inherited a bit of money nearly ten years ago (all gone now!), and I used some of it to create an incredible collection of British dramas. I watch them often and still derive so much pleasure from them.

As to Planty's reaction to Glencora's untimely death, he certainly grieved, but in his quiet, private way. After all, she would have been the first to upbraid him for shirking his duties as head of the family, as well as a Duke and a politician.

I think only the costumes for the first series were created for Hayley Mills. IIRC, that's the first 8 eps. After that they were designed and created specifically for Hampshire.
