Why the change on Bat-Mite's costume?

In the comics, he wears a much more faithful, albeit quite silly still, version of the Batsuit. In the cartoon, he seems to wear a cheap rabbit costume and a pajama. That without mentioning the green skin (the comic version had [Caucasian] human flesh looking colored skin). Some kind of copyright issue?

They managed to take one of the goofiest characters ever to appear in a superhero comic book, and make it even goofier!

No copyright issues, as Filmation had the rights to adapt the comics. More than likely, they just wanted the character to stand out a bit and add a bit of visual variety. Batgirl's costume was colored slightly differently than batman's, as well. Filmation tended to go for broader strokes for humor.
