Juan's Joke

In the episode where they all get locked in the class and they decide to sing and joke to help time go by, Juan (the spanish guy) gets up and tells a joke completely in Spanish (hilarious scene!) which no one understands, which is of course the joke. But I was wondering, what was Juan saying? It sounded like a good joke by itself. :)

reply

Yeah, I've often wondered that. I'll have to get my sister(who speaks fluent spanish) to translate it 'cause I'd love to know.

well my wife said it's not easy to hear how the jokes exactly goes because of the audience laughing but the gesture of raising your elbow up is deemed by spaniards and latinos as a way to insult to one's mother and that's what made the joke funny.

I think he said 3 guys had a rash, one on his neck-chest, one in the back of his neck and one under his arm pits different way in a restaurant and the waiter asked them if they are going to order from the menu.

He asked the first guy, look at the menu, what do you want to order? To which the guy is looking up and ignoring the menu and saying yeah yeah - looking up to scratch the rash on the back of his neck.

The waiter asked the second guy, are you going to order from the menu, and the guy says "yeah yeah yeah" while rubbing his chin on his chest because of the rash and making his head gestures of "no no no"

The waiter asks the third guy if he wants to order from the menu and that his mom is cooking to which the gent with the rash under his armpits replies, "yeah yeah yeah" while making the gesture of chinga tu madre - which was raising his elbow up like he did which is insulting one's mother.

Hope that helped a bit.

OK, native speaker here. I listened carefully and, truth be told, there's not much of a joke. The main point of the scene is that it's funny to see a foreigner telling a very physical joke in a foreign language. As someone else noticed, the other students are laughing so loudly, or the laugh track is so loud, that it's really hard to understand what he says. But here it goes:

Juan starts by saying, RESULTA... or "it turns out," which is a formula we use when we start telling a joke. It's about three brothers who are invited to a dinner, and are told not to scratch themselves as they all have scabies. One behind his neck, one under his chin, and the third brother under his right armpit. During dinner, the first brother throws his head back and moves it vigorously from left to right, as if to scratch his rash without using his hands. To disguise what he's doing, he says "I don't know what's happening to me."

Then the second brother lowers his head forward and moves it vigorously from left to right to scratch his (chin) rash without using his hands. To disguise what he's doing, he says "mentira, mentira" which means "it's a lie, it's a lie."

Then the third brother brings his right arm very close to his torso and starts moving it vigorously up and down, as if to scratch his armpit rash without using his hands. Like his brothers before him, he says something that would match his gesture and that would also serve as a reply to what his brothers said. This third brother clearly says "vAmonos, vAmonos!" (literally: "let's go"). The movement he does with his arms mimics a person walking and swinging their arms. That's why he says "let's go!"

The joke is that all three brothers manage to subtly scratch their rashes/scabies while at the same time appearing to have a conversation:
-I don't know what's wrong with me
-It's a lie (or, you are lying)
-Let's go!

Then Juan closes by saying, in English, "very good, very good." The punchline for us, the viewers, is that when Juan finishes, his classmates are utterly dumbfounded and silent because they didn't understand a thing!

Yep, that's a terrible joke. But it's nice to see this old show popping up in the trending bar - I remember it as very funny at the time.

I used to love this show - and I fancied the hell out of Francoise Pascal!

reply

Oh I think just about everyone did.
