Clothng on his first surface appearance...?

What I'd like to know is, if this guy was from underwater Atlantis and never been on the surface, where did he get those obviously surface manufactured shorts from? He should have been wearing either sharkskin, kelp, or just plain nude!

Part of the story line was that Mark Harris never knew where he came from. The computer doing the analysis was the one that stated "Last citizen of Atlantis?". It could have been assumed he was a bio-experiment that got away, or even an alien. Since the series was only on one season, I guess we'll never know.

I was thinking the same thing. He should have washed up nude. But you're right hightp. We never knew where he really came from. And the computers suggestion was most illogical.

If you'd seen the original Pilot Episode, "Man From Atlantis", (available of YouTube by searching "Man Form Atlantis, Pilot") you would have seen that when he washed up onshore, he was nude except for kelp (a thick type of seaweed) that was wrapped around his arms and torso.
Also visible in the emergency room scene was a strange type of bracelet that was never explained.
In the scene where Elizabeth took him back to the ocean, he was wearing the hospital gown that was placed on him after leaving the emergency room.
His yellow trunks were issued by the Navy Research Team (and later bore the mark of the specail undersea team that was formed.)

I think that they did a great job in keeping the possiblility of oceanic "clothing" to a minimum, and used the kelp and hospital sheets to mask his genetalia for the censors quite well.
It was never explained why he was required to wear clothing in his own personal tank (as seen in later episodes) but I believe that in the books it was explained to him that going au-natural was niether accepted nor safe for him (due to the fact that he did not have a natural pigment layer in his skin to protect him from sunlight.)

I know, I know I have too much info on this. ;) I watched it with great interest as a kid, followed the whole series, and loved it - despite my younger brother's protests that it was "stupid". Some people accuse Herb S. (the exec producer) of catering the series to younger viewers; and in part this was true, however, like the series "Star Trek" it appeared that all involved wanted the series to cater to young and old alike (note the truly adult comments that "Shubert" interjected - and other suggestive scenes that were obviously toned down due to censorship.)Sure, the two-headed seamonster was silly, but heck...was "The Hulk" any better at times? We are talking superhero genre, ain't we? ;)

This is a great post, it covered a lot of my thoughts exactly. Yes, they used kelp and hospital sheets, and his quiet demeanor also helped maintain the mystery. I am looking for the series on DVD, would like a good quality... I see what they have on youtube, but having to go to the mainscreen every 10 minutes is a bit of a pain.
It was a terrific series, except for that darn 2 headed seahorse sea monster. LOL
The underlying tensions were well done, and the possibilities were endless. It would be great to have it remade, if the new people would try to keep a good story without goofing it up or maiming it. It is ok to be old fashioned or have good moral storylines....

That is incorrect. If you remember "The Death Scouts," he was able to be misled by the aliens because a broken symbol on the spacecraft resembled the symbol on his trunks (described by the female alien as a conch and waves), which he specifically says was what they found him wearing when he first washed up on the beach, not given to him later. He was not nude, although it was hard to tell since the night scene was so dark. What's on his forearms and around his shoulders appears to be the shredded remnants of some kind of clothing, which is why he's still wrapped in it in the ER. The bracelet you think you saw looks like sleeve cuffs.

It's been way to long ago for me to remember, but didn't other "Atlantiens" come for him, or where they also aliens ?

And as for a remake... yes... I am for it.

Wouldn't you like for your kids to have a show to remember fondly as you do this one? The Pilot for "Aquaman" didn't get picked up, so doubt if we will see a remake thou.
