I think there was some homosexuals on the cruise, but if they didn't announce it, would anyone know?

I think the son of a rival captain, said captain played by Ted Knight, was supposed to be gay, but they never came right out and said it.

That would have been very eighties blonde Woody Brown, best known for the short-lived NBC primetime soap, Flamingo Road, and the deal was he was working on Stubing's cruise ship during a 'battle of the cruiseships' deal between the two ships, Stubings and Knight's character.

Knight resented his son being on his rival's ship. That doesn't seem to have anything to do with the character's sexuality and is all in the viewer, which seems to be the case where wanting gay characters to appear seems to be.

Ever see the documentary The Celluloid Closet? It explains how Hollywood used certain codes to flag gay characters for those who knew how to look for them.

There was an episode in the season 8 (storyline "Frat Brothers Forever") where Doc's Frat brother (Roy Thinnes) and the Frat brother's "cousin" are on the cruise. Frat bro told Doc he is gay and asks if it would affect their friendship.

There was also the episode 'I Don't Play Anymore' where Mackenzie Phillips played Gopher's former college roommate who had a sex-change.
