1978 episode: The Sect

I just found on Youtube the only episode of Lou Grant that I remember seeing as a child, the episode that dealt with one of the main character's reaction to finding out his son has shunned the world and has become a Hare Krsna. It was a surprisingly mature and balanced handling of such an event. I'm not a devotee myself but still chant, listen to kirtan, and occasionally visit a temple in my state and eat prasadam (foods consecrated to Lord Krsna in the temple, sort of like the Eucharist). The writer obviously had done a lot of research on Hare Krsna and treats the young man sympathetically. The dramatic tension involves the young man's father having to debate whether his son's adoption of an exotic religion is genuine or rather he has been brainwashed. There is even a debate about the ethics of "deprogramming" (a phenomenon that took off in the 70's thanks to the proliferation of weird cults). I really hope that now that Ed Asner has died, there might be more of a push to get Lou Grant released on disc. Here is the episode for those interssted in seeing it:
