from comedy to serious drama,

Did anyone find it strange that this show although it was a spinoff was totally the opposite of MTM . From comedy to serious drama, It never quite won me over,

While it was a spinoff in the technical sense of the word, it was practically an independent show, with no real ties to The Mary Tyler Moore Show. As you note, the tone of the show was much deeper.

Beyond that, it won me over right away and remains one of my favorite shows.

Windmills do not work that way!

I agree, this has been one of my favorite shows as well.

It wasn't always so serious, though. They would have some lighter moments, too. Animal was always good for comic relief.

Animal: "There's nothing dirty about the human body."
Donovan: "Except when it's yours."

It might have been interesting if Mary Tyler Moore had made an appearance in one of the episodes. I think there were a few episodes where one of Lou's old friends would drop in, but no one from WJM, as I recall.

The only character from TMTMS which appeared on Lou Grant was Mary's Aunt Flo, whom Lou had dated once or twice on the previous show.

I havent seen the episode in some 25 years, but I think the only reference to Mary was, "How's Mary?", "oh, she's fine."

I seem to recall in the last season when LG's ratings were sagging somewhat, there was some talk about Mary possibly making a special guest appearance, but for a variety of reasons it never came off.
