Serious plot flaw here.

As the episodes progress, we see Francis with different Sandmen hunting Logan. Now, I can buy Francis is a fanatic and has a vested interest (ruling the city as one of the elders) in bringing Logan back; but, I can't buy the fact that more and more people are leaving the city but are unchanged by what they are seeing outside.

Perhaps it's a flaw that could have led to an episode later, where the Sandmen start gossiping amongst themselves and the news spreads beyond, leading to conflict that the elders must stop. Heck, in a perfect world it could build across episodes until the elders are revealed to the populace (possibly by Logan or Jessica), which leads to outright revolt.

"Fortunately, Ah keep mah feathers numbered for just such an emergency!"

Yeah, I wondered the same thing. Also, are Logan and Jessica looking for a big sign that says, "Welcome to Sanctuary"? They find lots of places where they could settle.

reply

Francis would pick Sandmen he would trust to keep their mouths shut.

Yes Logan and Jessica are expecting to meet *are* looking for a big sign that says, "Welcome to Sanctuary" where Jessica's colleagues would be.

I don't think it is so much a plot flaw as a continuation of things which happen right at the end of the pilot episode. The elders have to send additional forces to rescue Francis & co from the Mountain City. In a later episode, we see that the Sandmen now patrol outside the city, something that would have been unheard of in Logan's time in the 'service', so it is a fair bet that the elders were growing increasingly concerned by the reports from the outside world.

It's a real tragedy that this show was never given time to develop. I've just finished re-reading the original novel and am about to re-watch the film but the older I get, the more I think that the TV version actually makes more sense than either.

There are too many problems to list but some things that bothered me are:
If they come from a carefully controlled city, how can Logan know how to build a fire? Or know what an "urn" is if everyone gets "renewed" in the Carousel?
How did all the weird little enclaves survive for hundreds of years?
How can they be so comfortable sleeping outside?
Their clothes never get dirty. Etc...

It's still a fun piece of '70s cheese with occasional bits of brilliance.

And their hair is always perfect and feathered. Guess REM has hair salon porducts in that tool kit.

Expansion to your ego.

"Expansion to your ego."? That's an obscure reference... Great book.

Oh, at your expense.

First one to get it! Congrats.

My biggest problem is they seem to escape the dome so easily. In the movie it was a challenge to leave. They had to survive under water, escape the sandmen and fight robots. But I enjoyed it more as they ventured into the desert. The other places make sense as they were underground or deep within the mountain side. Rem explains that the robots served the masters every wish and took care of them. The others probably descendants of bomb shelter survivors, people who left the dome and those who weren't affected by nuclear war. I enjoy seeing the other episodes soon.
