For Animal Lovers

They don't make shows like this anymore, sadly. It has such a gentle, good heart about it, that only a stone-hearted cynic could dislike this.

Sure, the stories are simple, but it teaches a respect for nature and Native Americans(Nacoma and his tribe) that it makes you realize how coarse and unpleasant much of today's culture is.

The theme song "Maybe" is moving; this series holds up, and the on-location filming is a huge asset as well. Thank God they didn't make this in a studio!

Any fans become Veterinarians or go into the Animal care field because of this series?

Grizzly Adams is an inspirational figure in that regard

reply

It's one of the reasons I'd still like to live in the mountains in a cabin. I used to watch these episodes when they were new.

reply

I sympathize greatly, since our modern society is such a screwed up mess, that the simplicity of living off the land in a cabin has great appeal, but the difficulty of living that way should not be underestimated.

The series can be seen on DVD now, and watching it again was like seeing them for the first time; I love this show!

Hi! New to this board. I just got very lucky because my local library
just got in both seasons on DVD. I just watched the first 4 last night.

Yep,animal lover here, something that comes natural to me as it does to
Grizzly Afams. Kicked off first by Radar on MASH but doubled from this series.

I know I watched this when I was 9 to 11 years old,when I
t was on NBC and some in (short lived) syndicated reruns up to 1981.

It's been so long that so far,I either don't remember them or maybe
time and life itself has pushed those god memries to the back of my mind.

One thing for sure though,I never forgbot that beautiful John Denver-like theme song. The minute I heard it,I felt the same way I did hearing it in the 70s as a kid.
Especially 1978-79 because in Sept. of '78,I fell in puppy love for
the first time. The song's plaing fresh in my mjnd as I speak.

The only sad thng here is that even though it's on DVD,it may never be restored to it;s former glory. I had to turn the color all the way up
on my TV to have the wilderness look colorful like it should.

Y'know,if this show had debuted in 1971,I'd bet it would
have last until '79 just the same. It really deserved more seasons.

Hi back happipuppi13, thanks for posting, this board is too quiet!

I watched it on NBC as well as a child, and remember being confused when it was cancelled; the story wasn't finished! I felt the same way when CBS cancelled 'The Incredible Hulk" in 1982.

Yeah, the DVD prints are a bit grainy, since I doubt the company re-mastered the vault negatives, assuming they still exist, which isn't always the case. I'm glad that they are out and revive interest in the series.

Now if someone can just get the original 1974 film on DVD, it will all be for sale, though it can be found on YouTube.

Libraries are still a valuable resource, glad yours was smart enough to acquire them.

Hi! Yes,my local library (where I'm at this moment) only started getting DVD's last year in spring. The "Adams" DVDs just came in about a month ago.

The title song is making me a bit moody I admit,I love the song but
it's also reminding me of the past when I was a kid. Innocent good times.

Yeah, the 1974 film and also the 1982 "Capture Of Grizzly Adams" would be great to see too.

(Avoid "The Legend Of Grizzly Adams with Gene Edwards as the lead.
....as well as 1999's "Grizzly Adams and the Legend of Dark Mountain" with Tom Tayback in the lead. UGH!

Well, last night I finished all but one episode on DVD. The one titled "Renewal",The" would not play at all. At this moment,I'm watching it on You Tube and whoever posted it doesn;t know how to position a video.

Still, better to finally see it than not.

Also have to play the last 6 minutes of the final show of 1978,the one set at Christmas. The DVD froze with that much time left. All in all though,a good experience and journey backto the 197s for me.

Love DVD extra interview with Dan on Disc one of Season 2. (If you haven't seen the DVD's,save that part for last. It makes a nice ending.

Sorry to hear you had trouble with the disc. Possibly someone who rented it before you mishandled it? (The trouble with not buying the DVDs!)

Dan Haggerty has aged well, and it was good to hear from him again.

I grew up with Grizzly Adams and loved it as a kid. I now am 43 and being disabled, I am not working at the moment. I have recently taken it upon myself to look the Adams part with the beard and long hair...because now I can. Even the look can make you an exile in a world that values a reliable clean image. I think the reason this type of show may not be well received today is because most people suspect how hard it would be to actually survive in the wild. Most people have very weak constitutions that would only become apparent in the absence of a sterile environment, steady food supply, and adequate shelter. Illness, food and warmth take on sobering proportions. There is a lot you need to do with food and water to make it safe. Many animals are not friendly or make themselves scarce. I'm sure there are more knowledgeable people who could explain it. I wouldn't want to be out there. As much as escape is appealing to me, I've mostly found that there is no place to go that I know of that constitutes heaven on Earth. Nature is nice to visit until it isn't.

God I loved this show when I was a kid. I'm definitely an animal lover and I can't wait to watch this series again.

I recommend getting the complete, two season DVD sets, which are likely your best bets to watch this, since I don't believe it is on any TV station, unless someone else knows of one.

Some episodes are up on youtube.
