I loved this show when it first aired in the '70s. But watching it now, it cracks me up how wildly different the actors' ages and physical appearances are. They look nothing alike. It should have been a show about a couple who adopt 8 children. The cast member who seems the most out of place is Dianne Kay (Nancy). She was blond and so pretty, she just didn't seem to fit in with the others.
Grant Goodeve, Susan Richardson and Dianne Kay were all born in 1952. Laurie Walters and Betty Buckley were both born in 1947. Lani O'Grady and Grant Goodeve always seemed so much older than the other kids, like they were 40 and still in high school, LOL.
"These kids today, with their hula-hoops and fax machines."
It seems like everyone says this but I really don't think so. I know several large families where there were blonde, brown and red head kids all in the same family. It's going to be hard casting the same facial features for sure but they were all pretty much the same height. And both David and Mary were out of college by the end of the second season so they were supposed to be "older".
Yes, Betty Buckley was actually younger in real life than Laurie Walters, but I thought Abby looked older than Joanie. For sure, Abby was sort of young for Tom, but I thought their relationship was believable.
And I always thought that the Brady Bunch casting was a little contrived - all blonde girls and all brown headed boys.
In the end, I'm guessing it had to be a nightmare casting this 10 person cast. Just think, 5 of the original cast members didn't make it into the 2nd season. Dick Van Patten wasn't the original choice for Tom; Mark Hamill got in a car accident and was replaced with Grant Goodeve; Dianne Kay and Willie Aames replaced the original Nancy and Tommy; and then Diana Hyland died paving the way for Abby played by Betty Buckley. By the time the 2nd season rolled around, my guess is that the casting department was happy just to have actors in these roles!
Agreement with both especially the part about the casting department happy to have somebodies willing to play these roles
Di Kaye is supposed to be beautiful at least somebody has to be to draw in the viewers
Those scenes with Di Kay and C Needham luring on the staircase in their nightgowns has to be the most remembered ones in this series
Nevermind the whining and groaning of everybody else except for D Van Patten and the E Family Pooch
Everybody whines on here except for Di Kay, C Needham and the Pooch
Therefore Di Kay and C Needham need to be cast by beautiful actresses and Central Casting gets it right this time
L Walters actually elder than B Buckley just goes to show how great an actress L Walters can get who would believe that
That Lesbian daughter sure has a short fuse Okay so she's over 40 and trying to get out of H School Happens all the time around here except that nobody can get into med School
G Goodeve who knows if he's supposed to be hot J Prather must think so but next to her everybody blends into the woodwork which is what this show must be all about
That redhead what a trip no need to talk about that one M the Peril must be hallucinating by now
W Aames who knows he's probably still in H School now
B Buckley obviously wanted attention so that's what that is all about to launch a television career out of a Broadway one how often could that happen when nobody knows anything about Bway in Hwood
Back to Di Kay that's what discussions should be about or maybe C Needham They say the girl before her was 17 and looked over 21 whereas Di Kay was 21 and looked less than 17
That just goes to show how great Di Kay really is and how sometimes even Central Casting gets it right
But they did try to take in elements from S of Music by doing some business about dancing in chorus lines probably at the suggestions and hampering of B Buckley who obviously wanted back on Bway big time fast
And that Pooch should have been given much more air time than she actually got because next to her most of the Cast blends into the dog house and not in the good kind of way
