The ending reminded me of the equally downbeat finale to the wonderful British comedy/drama Budgie, with Adam Faith.
Budgie similarly had to go on the run to preserve his life, with the future looking very bleak for him - London and petty thievery being the only things he knew, and leaving it meant leaving his girlfriend, family etc, perhaps forever.
Whilst it was very sad and now, with the deaths of several members of the cast including Adam Faith, there's no chance of a sequel ever being made, in a way I think, as with Citizen Smith, it was the perfect ending - Wolfie and Budgie are preserved forever in our memory at their best. Maybe they went on to have hugely successful lives, maybe not. Finding out might spoil things, bring them back down to Earth with a bump, whereas as it stands they enjoy a mythical life in our imagination.
