I can understand the political reasons they didn't pull their guns often, but they do an awful lot of pointing.
But after a chase and ten cars flipped all Ponch or Jon do is approach the suspect with one hand on their gun belt? the other hand pointed like a gun while they point and yell for them to get out of the car.
It's like what are you going to do if they try something?poke and tickle them into submission?
So cop shows got hammered for all of the violence. SWAT was a hit but it got cancelled. Starsky and Hutch got toned down for seasons 3 and 4. Chips obviously decided to go a different direction. Overall it is a pretty light hearted show (yes corney if you will).

Mission Impossible was also toned down in its later seasons.
sharemost of those shows are corny now so will any shows made now in 20 or 30 years time
