The worst episode ever?

Of course it's in season 6, among fans known as "That which is not mentioned".

My pick is Episode 8, "Head Over Heels" Ponch's fiancee episode. Just unbearable in every way. Anyone think there's a worse one?

There are too many at the bottom of the barrel to make a definitive choice. I reviewed S5's finale Force 7 and thought it was pretty bad, but then I started watching S6. I'd say the alien/UFO episode was my pick for the worst.

IMO, what made Head Over Heels even worse was his having a GF of the week (all of which were far better looking women) within a couple of episodes, which in real time would be a few weeks. The love of his life was never mentioned. Then again, he married the girl in the VW from the 1977 S1 pilot and had a kid with her sometime after 1983/S6 (CHiPs '99 plot), so his long-term relationships were not always in close proximity.

RIP Ron Swanson. Writers created your awesomeness in S1 and killed it in S7

Yeah, and she died too right? I will have to dig out my CHIPS 99 movie and re watch. He was raising a son on his own cause the wife died right? Poor Ponch, and in real life Erik didn't have too much luck with his first two marriages! I guess the third one as they say is a charm. His current wife seems like a really nice person, and is good for him. They have an adorable teenage daughter together too! I keep up with them on his Twitter page, and they seem very happy!

I would love to hear the first two wives side of things. I read his autobiography, so I know his version. Apparently the first wife was a scammer. With him for his money, and claimed all kinds of abuse, just to get a lot of money in the divorce settlement. Preplanned all along! And the second one was just a b*tch according to him, but they had two sons together!

Force 7 from Season 5 was completely unwatchable. Honestly, I think it was far worse than anything from season six. If Fred Dryer can't save it, there is no saving the episode.

Should we even consider 'Force Seven' or 'Mitchell & Woods,' since they're really 'back-door' pilots that bear very little connection to their so-called parent series?

However, I'm glad I don't remember either episode from the original airing. I would've been 7 or 8 years old at the time and thinking the age-appropriate equivalent of 'WTF?' when I'm expecting to see Ponch & Jon race down the freeway.

Some of the season six episodes (the ones involving the BRAT Patrol, or Rich Little and Elvira) are pretty bad. Also notable, but not really unusual, is that the final episode re-used the 'Force Seven' headquarters set. And why in the world are CHP explorers patrolling high school hallways anyway???

Should be just "school hallways", since CHIPS' last episode involved junior high
school victims of extortionists that weren't even fellow students.

reply

Don't know if I ever saw the other pilot (if I did, I've forgotten it), but boy was "Force Seven" bad. I can watch every other episode of the first five seasons, but if I know this one is airing, I'll skip it.

The two-parter with the celebrity bike race/flag football tournament just went off. Part one wasn't too bad, but the celebrity tournament was just awful. It was pretty much Harlan rattling off every big star of 1980 for five minutes.

Oh stewardess...I speak jive.

The dreaded UFO episode in season 8 is the pits of the world. At this point the producers were throwing EVERYTHING against the wall just to see if anything stuck. But still, good to know the highway patrol can protect us against galactic invaders.

reply

Season 6 is when that "UFO episode" ("Journey to a Spacecraft") appeared. There were only 6 seasons, not 8.

reply

Lots of people are putting down the alien/UFO episode, but I have to say that I actually like it, as implausible as it is. I deliberately skipped over the opening teaser, so I found the final scene at the "landing site" really quite surprising as I had assumed that everything had been an hallucination up to that point. (But for the most part, over all, the entirety of season 6 is not good.)

I LOVED that ep. Only because it showed Erik romantically !! When they show him kissing or slow dancing or something with women!! SIGH!! (take out actress, insert me) haha!!

I just wasn't thrilled over the actress that played her. Remember we had a discussion going on and I said she had clown hair and a clown face or something? Haha! But that lady really was a former girlfriend of Erik Estrada's !

reply

Season 3 opener is pretty bad, with the celebrity roller skating and the roller skating thieves. Not much reason for it to have been a 2 parter in my opinion.

Conquer your fear, and I promise you, you will conquer death.

That episode with Rich Little running around in a leftover costume from Sigmund and the Sea Monsters...when they caught him, I was expecting him to say, "I would've gotten away with it, if it weren't for you meddling Chippies!"

My hubs and I love this show and have watched all of the season 1-3 episodes and are now working our way thru the season 4 set. So far, the worst one for us has been "Sick Leave." The plot was a bit silly (by far not the worst) but what really grates is the fellow officer's (Andy?) acting- this guy chews the scenery so hard it's a wonder there's anything left. He really overacts and badly to boot. By the end of the episode we were almost happy to see what happens to him!
