What happened to her hair?

Maybe I missed something? After she recovered after the birth of her daughter, she puts her hand up to her hair and says "My hair! What's happened to my hair?" or something. But nobody answered her. Did they just cut it off because she'd been in bed for a while?
I own the book but it's still on my to-read list.

When women suffered terrible fevers during previous centures, their caregivers often cut off their hair to give them relief. Men's and women's heads were sometimes shaved to allow for leeches to be applied to their heads during severe illnesses.
