I have long been a fan of the books and the series but as I watch the marvelous actors in each episode I have to wonder: how real are the situations. What I mean is that throughout the series you see calfs being born and animals getting stitched up and I wonder if the actors were just acting or did they have to actually do anything with the animals for real. I can't think of many actors that would be that dedicated, that's all. Does anyone know?

Yes, the animal operations are happening as you see them. It's just that you see the hands of a real veterinary surgeon, making it look as if Herriot or Farnon, etc. are doing the operation.
