Who watches this!

Ok, I'm from the US and happened to catch this show one day, although I will admit that Tony Sympson was awesome in the eposide Beauty of the Beast, wow, overall this show is pathetic! Do people in England really watch this trash?? Wow, ever heard of special effects, comedy and/or entertainment?? Have you ever sat back, watched this show, then watched 24 or Lost or even Brady Bunch and then compared them, this show was horrible! Please, I'm curious as to what you find so good about this show! Wow, and also, would it hurt having a hot chick in the show? I mean come on, it was like a sausage fest with old guys and unattractive old women!!!!

I hope someday this show "falls through the stool". Best Regards, SympsonFan

reply

I'm from the US too, and I'm while you are entitled to your opinion, it seems like your type of entertainment can best be described as boobs and fart jokes, with pointless computer animation thrown in for good measure. Yes, this show is different from 24. Not everything has to be about adreneline and testosterone. Maybe you should just stick to Benny Hill.

reply

Lol , do not worry he doesn't have class or taste.
I also think he should stick with Benny Hill!
It will definitly give him an adreneline rush

Sex-obessesed Americans = brainless Americans without any taste or class

Why on earth are you watching this show and commenting on It , If you don't know anything about Brittish comedy or Britwit in the first place??

reply

The answer to your question "Who watches this?" is - everyone with sensibility and class.

reply

It's hard to tell whether the OP is a troll or a loud mall-brat who lives in a cultural vacuum. There are few differences between the two.

reply

Just as a small reminder...this show is from 1978! Way before there were special effects as seen on 24 or whatever...
I like the show...

reply

LOL, difficult indeed--classic case of a distinction without a difference.

reply

Special effects are fine, in the right places, BUT.....to slam a show just because of the lack of SFX? Idiotic! SympsonFan is a mental midget, who lusts for bright, shiny objects. But, to be fair...he/she's likely very young, considering his/her tabbing "old" characters as a bad thing. Maybe TV should consist ONLY of 20-somethings and explosions. THEN, he/she'd be happy.

Or not. Read a book, SF!

reply

Not even worth answering. Then again, you're american...it figures.

Now, please, Angel 44, don't lump all of us Americans together. I live in the American Midwest, and I really like this show. In fact, I'm watching it right now. I came on IMDB to look up some info on the actors.

I read and loved all of James Herriot's books while I was in middle and high school. And as for British television in general, I am a great fan of Agatha Christie mysteries. I never miss the Miss Marple and Poirot shows if I'm home. Midsomer Murders is another favorite.

Just wanted you to know we're not all uneducated cretins in the United States.

No offence intended. :)

No problem, Angel 44. :)

I, too, was wandering around the internet trying to find more information on one of my all-time favorite shows. I watched James Herriot's Yorkshire the other day and I bought ACG&S series 7 last night. I'm from the Southeast USA and I love British television. I grew up watching this show in reruns on PBS and when they stopped airing, I started watching reruns of Are You Being Served.

Television today is (for the most part) garbage. At least it is in the US. There are a few good shows still around. Personally I haven't watched television in years...never had a reason to. I think All Creatures was highly underrated and deserved more recognition.

I'm American, and darned proud of it. I love some of the British series and "All Creatures Great and Small" is one of them. It is an excellent series. One of the things that makes it so good is the character development. This is something that is almost totally lacking in most American series and the sit-coms, which I gave up watching years ago, are among the absolute worst.

My wife, ten years my junior, alos likes this show. This goes to show how good this show really is. My wife prefers thinks like "I Love Lucy" where the comedy is slapstick and hit the watcher over the head with a two-by-four whereas I prefer comedy that is more subtle and cerebral.

I'm American too and agree with JR Slaughter on this. I haven't watched TV shows for many years. One of the things I love about All Creatures is how articulately the scripts are written - it is a joy to hear the English language used the way it is in this series. I'm afraid it is long gone in America.

reply

How sad that we are seen in this way. I am an American, and I love All Creatures Great and Small. I also love Great Britain; we were fortunate enough to be able to spend several months there. It is a beautiful country, full of History and lots of very lovely people.

Hope you don't speak for many . . .

reply

Just a memory refresher for everyone bashing Americans: The Herriot stories were not originally well-liked in the UK. The Herriot books became well known because of American readers who adored the stories and made them best sellers. Check it out.

Unfortunately, the OP was asking for it. His/her post was immature and rude. There is one from him/her just as bad below. I picture the OP as an 11 year old who has been unsupervised and left for several years to run amok.

I am an American and I treasure this precious series. I have a great appreciation for the quality of programs and movies from the U.K. In fact, I much prefer to watch any non-American show over an American show.

Hollywood is filling us with absolute rubbish.

*Points at Hollywood* Exterminate!

Sorry, had to do it. Doctor Who. Daleks. Ok.

It's only one of the best shows ever made.

Interrobang!?

reply

hey Angel 44 and KBomb, why don't you get a room! Pathetic!

I still think this show sucks, and I really can't wait for new Power Rangers movie to come out, special effects and hotties!

On another note, watch Slingshot, if you like crap like All Creatures Great and Small, you'll love that piece of poop... See my comment on that message board!

USA rules, rest of planet drools!!

It's still hard to tell if the cretin is a troll or just supernaturally dumb. It seems obvious at first that he's a wind up merchant but there's something very committed about the sheer mouthbreathing, knuckledragging stupidity contained in his message.

reply

Troll, clearly. Just ignore him, let him go away

reply

I'm American, lived down Souwth in Arkansa', and I loved the books, and find the show fun too!

And never forget today, that you are from...Old...Virginia!!!

reply

This show was based upon books about a vet service in the 1940's (when's the last time you read something----Comic books don't count)...This show isn't really for the ADHD generation....

reply

From OP's first post I wasn't sure whether he was a troll or just stupid. However, from his second post it is now clear that he's a troll: nobody could be that stupid.

reply

I think this guy (got to be a guy) is having us on. No one is really that stupid AND that vocal about it.

This is indeed one of the best shows ever made. I have a friend who swears it makes his blood pressure go down. What a wonderful man James Herriott was. I cried when I read he'd died--but what a lovely life he had!

reply

I adore this series, because it is simple, realistic storytelling at its finest and of an era long gone. I read the books, the first 3, way back, probably the 1st after the 1st season aired on US PBS. Hooked, cried! enthralled. The writing pulls one in; the show is so very true to the characters and the actors perfect representations of the main characters. I rented the original 3 seasons in 2007 when I had a litter of puppies and needed to stay awake for the first 10 days for the 1am to 5am shift and thought: what will really keep me interested? Watching again for the first time in 20 years this series! At the time I found out Netflix also had other years I'd never seen, perhaps had not run in the US at all... the later seasons and some specials. Can't say that all of them were as interesting as the original 3 seasons and one of the first specials, but Christopher was in all of them and well, much better than most of the trash (i.e., plot-driven with no characterization or all about death) on American TV these days.

Hooray to Mrs. Pomfrey! what a character... and her gardener! LOL!

reply

I do. I saw it once on the bbca channel and loved it, so I decided to went all the seasons. Very good show by the way 10/10.

Unfortunately, killing is one of those things that gets easier the more you do it.

reply

Perhaps the same people who watch the stupid unfunny idiotic useless tripe that you as an american watch. WOW now if you really want to watch stuff that is for braindead twits then just pick any american tv show.no wonder the rest of the world laughs at you lol oh and WOW

reply

I love this show; it's far better than any American television (and I come from California, land of the television industry.)

The restraint by British writers in suggesting things that are never talked about is something American television never approaches. I am thinking about Siegfried's "visiting Mother" in Broughton which the other characters gradually come to understand is a euphemism for spending time with women. It's never discussed, never articulated, but the subtle little amused reactions of the various characters make the audience understand this perfectly.

It's the way things happen in real life, when we love someone and don't want to expose their foibles although we perfectly understand what is going on. It's about the comedy of human nature, whereas American tv comedy by contrast is about cheap laughs that don't touch you on any emotional level.

reply

I too am from California and I couldn't agree more. American TV and movies are all about IN YOUR FACE. How refreshing to have ARTICULATE, nonoffensive, subtle humor in a TV program. We have been so "dumbed down" in this country that I'm not sure the younger generation would even understand some of the dialog - altho I am aware there are some very smart young people who like this show!
