Scruffy (1980)

I saw this a long time ago, maybe around early 1995 when I was turning 6. I think my mom or my grandpa rented it for us on VHS to watch at my grandma's house, as I doubt it's been seen on TV since it originally aired. I'm afraid to see the rest of it because I don't want to start blubbering.

Before looking it up on Youtube, all I remembered was Duchess and Scruffy sleeping, then the house was set on fire. Then later, Duchess and Scruffy leave their new house but Scruffy looks back and asks "do we have to?" I thought that she was looking at the house that had caught on fire. But it was demolished. I also kept thinking the dogs were Dalmatians, after not seeing it for many years. Watched it up to the point where the hunters shoot at poor Scruffy. I can't watch the rest.

Who else hasn't seen this in ages?

The hunters shot poor Duchess on purpose! ?

No, the guys shooting were ranchers who mistook Scruffy and Dutchess as feral dogs attacking their livestock. The dogs simply were lost and wandered by mistake onto the ranch.

Some Scruffy info for you. The special actually aired quite a bit in the early 80's, and was considered a favorite by many watchers of the ABCWS. It went to video not long after and you can still find good copies on EBay for VHS. (Time for a restored DVD version Warner Archives!) Yes, it's one of the sadder specials, groundbreaking at the time with on screen deaths, but the story is uplifting by the end, and despite the old style hand drawn tv animation, you have to admit the artists at Ruby Spears were spot on accurate when it came to drawing various dog breeds! Roller coaster ride of a special, but enjoyable.

There's no record of it airing on TV some time in early 1995 ish? Then I guess somebody did rent the video tape for us. It's sad how Duchess didn't understand that somebody else was coming to take her home and then ran away.
