Why was it terrible? The irony is delicious. It's so bittersweet. I first saw this film as a kid and I can still recall feeling so upset with what happened to Ostap. Mironov played his role with moxie.

Unlike Gaidai's film, this makes better use of Ilf and Petrov's fantastic vocabulary. I practice my Russian watching this film. They were brilliant writers.
