reply

no, it's really as cheesy as hell. i was surprised to see the good quotation it has on imdb. the idea is interesting but that's mostly all: acting is awful, two idiot playing two british (idiotic) tourists, behaving stupidly and saying stupid things. the typical b-movie.
the children-victims-of-the-world revenge idea of the film is obscenly exploitative and just as dumb as hell.
Avoid this film!

reply

i say it is definitely worth watching it. i just did so, and i was really surprised how enthralling and interesting the story is. it's not very creepy or scary, but you always wanna know whats happening next.
i read about this film in a list of eli roth's recommendations, and you can cleary see at least two things in this film which influenced scenes in thanksgiving and hostel 2 :)

reply

I don't know if Roth had seen this before he made the first Hostel, but the children in it are similar to the ones in both movies.

Spoiler:

I think the influence on Hostel: Part II you're talking about is when he shoots the first child? I'm trying to figure out which scene may have influenced the Thanksgiving trailer.

reply

i just thought the parade in thanksgiving looked was shot a bit like the one in this film, and especially the music sounds similar.

And speaking of hostel 2, i meant the bathory scene, where the women cuts the girl with a scythe, that didn't happen in quien puede... but the kids swung a scythe under a man who was hanging upside down above them... i think these two scenes looked similar

reply

That's what that scene immediately reminded me of, too!

reply

All evil children seem similar.

"Avoid this film!"

Man am I glad I don't listen to these silly warnings.

I saw a version that was all subtitled so I didn't have to deal with any annoying British accents. But yes, the female lead character is very annoying and token, very weak and prohibits their own survival, just like most female characters in old horror films. But in response to your extremely old question, yeah, give it a watch, it's worth one. But next time why don't you make up your own mind on what you wanna watch, who cares what somebody recommends.

Hollywood used to create, now they just destroy.

reply

Yes. It is not a standard cheesy horror. No jump scenes. Quite slowly paced and probably too subtle and smart for gore-hounds. In fact it reminded me of Antonioni's The Passenger in its look and pace.

reply

My parents made us leave the theatre before the end. My friend had come with us to see the movie and he was almost vomiting in the bathroom.

From my distant memory (we're about 11 yrs old when the movie was released in N. America.) it wasn't a bad movie, and it did seem scary, but I was pretty young. I still remember a few key scenes such as the improvised pinata scene.

I guess I need to watch it again.

reply

Its really worth watching i just saw it and was amazed really good movie.

Don't see how this film can be seen as 'brilliant'.

Honestly, if you have your pregnant wife with you and walk away only to find murdered people, you're going to keep looking around rather than go back to her and make sure she's safe? If you come across a group of children treating a man as a pinata on a desolate island where, obviously, something is wrong, you're gonna go grab a drink and continue trying to justify not leaving?

Spare me. The movie is silly.

reply

I'm used to common sense flying out the window in horror films but the main character was just friggin' ridiculous. *SPOILER AHEAD* If you see a girl beat an old man to death with a cane and then said man hung on a rope being used as a pinata, you grab your *beep* and you get the hell out.

Aside from that, and the crappy acting of the main two characters, I thought this was worth watching. There was a good sense of tension and dread and the location just made the whole thing work. I can say this scared me more than 'Children of the Corn'.

reply

I think if I worried about characters doing stupid things in horror films I would have given up on them 20-some years ago when I first saw Ellen Sandweiss walk out into the woods in the middle of the night wearing her nightgown in The Evil Dead, and every other horror film that came out where characters don't leave when they should, don't listen to warnings, have sex in graveyards, abandoned buildings, or mines. Don't finish off the killer when they have him knocked down etc etc etc...

I say you should definitely give this a try. I was thoroughly impressed with it. It beats a lot of Italian horror, in my book. There's little gore, but the atmosphere is awesome.

This film was great, yes the acting can be a bit melodramatic (the girl) but overall a very well done movie for low budget fair. I enjoyed it and recomend it.

reply

No. If you have any self respect do NOT bother. This movie really bummed me out. I was kind of excited to watch it. I hadn't heard of it before & it just sounded spooky. Instead you get about 5 minutes of anything worth a damn. They should've called this "Who Can Walk Around an Abandoned Village for Almost Two Hours and Not Tell Your Wife What's Going On".

This movie is crap. And I like movies that are crap. Waste of time.

reply

It was worth watching, nothing to go screaming to your family and friends about. The ending was kind of cool, the concept is cool but the characters are stereotypical morons in a horror movie which always annoys me.

reply

I'm going to say a really strong "YES." I just saw this for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I can't stop recommending this movie to people. Loved it. Completely original. I think it rivals the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre as far as pure unadulterated psychologically traumatic horror. You won't find another movie quite like this one. If you're into mindless horror films like the unoriginal crap that gets wide releases nowadays, this probably won't be your kind of movie either. If you like to see some new ideas thrown out there, and you don't mind going through the experience of being really uncomfortable as a viewer...check this out.

reply

After watching it I thought DAMN that movie was gory.
But looking back, there's no gore at all.
Just dead bodies.
It's one of those movies that's so enthralling and engrossing that you lose yourself in it.
