What's with the ending?! Contains SPOILERS!

Wasn't this the worst and most surprising end you have ever seen? Jackie Chan, his friends and every body who was on the good side just get blasted down with rifles?! And before you even realize what is happening, the music just ends with a happy little "tadaa" and THE END shows all over the screen. What the f...? Was that supposed to be a good ending? How can they let all the good guys die? And at the same time play stupid party music? And when the screen just turned black 5 seconds after he got killed, I just stared at the screen thinking "this must be a joke".

Comments anyone?

That's how the story goes.

well for 1 .. Hong Kong cinema doesn't follow the same norms as Hollywood and it's typical in Epic Kung Fu and Wuxia films for there to be a "diappointing" ending. Bride With White Hair is a good example of this. Heck even Hollywood did this with movies like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

2... this movie was loosely a remake/sequel to Bruce Lee's "Fist of Fury". In the original Fist of Fury Bruce Lee's character (Chen Zen) dies in much the same way at the end of the movie.

3... The ending is intentionally set up this was to be Sino-centric (patriotic to China) while porytraying The Japanese as cruel and heartless (as one chracter in this movie said "those Japanese have no scruples"). The ending was a poignant microcosm of the larger scale conflict caused by the WWII-era Japanese occupation of parts of China.

best ending ever. i mean it.

Agreed. It was downright heroic and it moved me emotionally almost as much as the original Bruce Lee film. If you're going to make a sequel to such a great film, why spoil it just to satisfy a small fraction of an American audience? True fans of the genre (Western and Asian alike) will get this ending and we VASTLY outnumber those who don't.

this movie, 'new fist of fury', is the sequel to bruce lee's 'fist of fury'.
the japanese betrayed the agreement they had wih the kung fu school that bruce belonged to, which was to spare the school if bruce would turn himself in to them. bang. died. the end.
comes in jackie...jacky with new fist of fury- joins the same - but however relocated kung fu school.
how jacky constantly stood up to the japanese reminded nora miao of her ol' love , bruce lee.
that's fuqin why bruce lee kept on showing up!
if you have seen 'fist of fury' then you would know.

I saw the movie 10 minutes ago. I liked it until I saw the end. The end of the movie was just pointless. There was really no reason for all the protagonists to die. Especially that way. That end destroyed the whole movie. I am not saying that any movie should have happy end but here... Chen Zhen`s death in the original movie was good. I mean there was a reason for it. But Chen Lung`s death was without a reason.

It's an Anti-Japanese Movie. As the Japanese are worse Material Arts Fighters than the Chinese they shoot cowardly all the brave Chinese kung fu fighters.

"Well, nobody's perfect."

New Fist of Fury(1976) had a dark tone. It felt like a horror movie at times.
The fight scenes were well staged, but there were not enough of them. When Rumble in the Bronx(1995) was released in the US, my sister bought me some older Jackie Chan movies on VHS. New Fist of Fury was packaged with Snake Fist Fighter(1971).
