THE ASCENT to be on TCM Sept 7, 2009
In checking through the upcoming schedule for Turner Classic Movies, I see that "THE ASCENT" will be shown Midnight (Monday/Tuesday) of September 7th. Get your DVD-R's set to record!
shareI'm glad that I caught this airing. I just wish I had recorded it as I definitely need another viewing to digest this. What came off as a simplistic struggle turned into a struggle of a completely different nature. I still don't know what to make of motivations beyond the story itself.

I think I could figure some of it out.
This is what I saw, which may or may not be totally correct:
Christian allegory. Christ figure (Sotnikov) self sacrifice. Judas figure (Rybak) trades for his freedom, betraying the resistance. Weak interrogator, as in his character, as was Pilate. Struggle for ideals versus survival, no matter what is takes That is about all.

Yes, I too feel that I need to see it again. It's very well photographed, and I enjoyed the religious undertones. It reminded me a bit of Stalker for those reasons, though I didn't like it as much.
A really unique picture, but I can't say that I loved it after my first viewing.
